PNZ SELECTION PROCESS Changes have been made to the selection process for 2011/ 2012. The changes have come as a result of feedback from the survey on last season’s process, and PNZ Board discussions. Main Changes Inclusion of 2011 Triples results for qualifying points No skills assessment as part of qualifying No ‘other tournaments’ (e.g. Kapiti, Bayview) used for qualification Process extended to a two year cycle, beginning in 2011/12 for Women, and 2012/13 for Men/Open Camps venue to be in region with greatest concentration of those who qualify. Establishment of National Squads Selection Camp and Training Camp for Senior Group 2012 International Tournaments The tournaments for which representative teams need to be found in 2012 are: Trans Tasman (to be held in New Zealand) Oceania (scheduled to be held in the Wallis & Futuna Island) Open World Championships (France). In addition, PNZ may consider sending a team to the Pan Pacific Championships. This will thus be a very busy and expensive one, particularly for the Open players who may be selected for representation at both Oceania and the World Champs. Please be aware of the possible financial implications when you make yourself available for the process. PNZ is aware that there may be some players who would like to represent NZ but for a variety of reasons are unable to commit themselves to all the international tournaments, and so we are offering a Trans Tasman-only option. Two-year process Feedback from the surveys undertaken over the past couple of years indicates that both players and coaches/selectors think it desirable to move towards the development of National Squads, rather than starting over with qualifying each year. In line with this, we are going to trial extending the selection process to a two-year process, aligning with the cycle of the World Championships. We will begin with the Women’s group this year, aiming at the 2013 World Championships, and bring in the Men’s group the following year, to select the team for the 2014 Worlds. The players who qualify for the selection camp will form the national squad for the following 2 years. This means that unless there are people who pull out during the two year cycle, there will be no new entrants in the next season. Players will still be expected to register for the process each year and pay the annual $50.00 fee. It is not expected that there will be much difference to the current process in the first year but there will be variations in the second year, where the squad will have training camps rather than selection camps. Registration To register for the selection process, players must complete a Registration form and forward it to PNZ, along with a non-refundable $50 fee, by 16th September 2011. The fees are used to offset the expenses of administering the selection process throughout the country. Players in the open and female sections who qualify for Camp One will also be expected to pay a $500 deposit, by 3rd February 2012, to go towards travel costs if selected for an overseas tournament. In the case of non- selection this deposit will be refunded in full. Qualification Players will qualify for Camp One for their respective groups as follows: Players in the 2011 Trans Tasman team will have automatic qualification for Camp One once they register for the process and pay their registration fee. These players are however encouraged to participate in Qualifying Tournaments, as performance in these events will be taken into consideration for selection purposes. Other registered players will qualify on the basis of points gained at designated Qualifying Tournaments as set out below. All aspects of the qualification process, including performance in qualifying tournaments and at Camp One, will be considered when selecting players for International Tournaments. Qualifying Tournaments Available tournaments Best two results from each level (i.e. 2 from Regional and 2 from National) will count. National All Groups: 2011 Triples, Singles & Doubles as above plus 2011 Women’s Triples Women: Seniors: - as above plus 2011 Senior Doubles (Mandatory) 2011 Women’s Triples Regional All Groups: 2011 Triples, Singles, and Doubles (Players must nominate their region on the Registration Form) Points Allocation Nationals 1st 120pts 2nd 100pts 3rd/4th 80pts 5-8 60pts For tournaments with less than 16 teams competing 1st 100 pts 2nd 80 pts 3rd/4th 60pts 5-8 40 pts 9-16 40pts Points begin at the highest player in each group i.e. top female/senior. This means that if the highest-placed female at the National Doubles comes 7th overall, she will get 120 points (not 60); and if the next highest female is placed 11th overall, she will get 100 points (not 40). Regionals 1st 60 points 2nd 50pts 3rd/4th 40pts 5-8 30pts 9-16 20pts In tournaments with less than 16 teams competing 1st 40 pts 2nd 30pts 3rd/4th 20 pts 5-8 10 pts No differentiated scoring for females or seniors i.e. points given as per overall placing. Selection and Training Camps The players who qualify will be put through marked games at Camp One. This will give them a position relative to others. At Camp Two, players in the squad will be tried in various combinations to set them up for the National Triples, and potentially the overseas tournaments. Skills training will also be undertaken at this camp. From the squad, 6 players will be selected for the Trans Tasman. Depending on performance, these players are likely to form the team for Oceania and then the 3 or 4 for the Worlds will come from that. Depending on the experience with the Trans Tasman teams, there may be some changes in players and/or combinations for Oceania. There are expected to be further training camps throughout the season to develop players and select combinations for the various tournaments. Venues The venues for the Camps will be decided once the participants are known, as they will be based on the geographical location of participants and availability of officials and volunteers. Dates Camp One Men & Women Seniors 10th/11th February 2012 17th/18th February 2012 Camp Two 17th/18th March 2012; This will be a joint camp i.e. Men, Women, and Seniors combined at one venue. Open Group 12 players will qualify for Camp One and form a national squad that will be used to select players for the designated international tournaments in 2012. Players from the squad will be required to play in team combinations, selected by selection panel, at the National Triples. Women With the trialling of a 2-year process, the players who qualify for the 2012 Camp One will form the national squad through to 2013. 12 players will qualify for Camp One. Players from the squad will be required to play in team combinations, selected by selection panel, at the National Triples. Seniors 12 male and 12 female players will qualify for Camp One. A team of six male and six female players will be announced after this camp, with these 12 players forming the team for Trans Tasman and going on to Camp Two. Players from this squad will be required to play in team combinations, selected by selection panel, at the National Triples. Selection Panels There will be a 3-member selection panel for each group i.e. Open, Women’s and Seniors. Selectors cannot be players in the selection process for the specific event for which teams are being selected, or have close personal relationships with those involved in the process (e.g. family ties, marriage) for the particular group (Open, Women, Seniors). Coaching It is intended to appoint a coach for each of the squads, to work with them at Camps and competitions. This will depend on PNZ being able to find suitable people willing to take on this role. Commitment Players who register for the process are required to play in National Triples in the team combinations determined by the Selectors, attend training camps, and play in the international events for which they may be selected. Non-fulfilment of these requirements without good cause may impact on selection opportunities in subsequent years. For any further information on the process please contact the PNZ Secretary, who will forward your enquiry to the appropriate Board Member for a response. Petanque New Zealand August 2011
