Lakes Edition Jan2014CTION 6
I would like to welcome you back to the nursery. I hope you had a wonderful winter break
and are all set for 2014. I hope this year brings along health, happiness and success in
abundance. Wishing you all the best in the months ahead!
It is great to see the children back in the nursery all revitalized with bountiful energy.
Gretchen Owocki, a famous author and professor writes that as astronauts and space
travellers children puzzle over the future; as dinosaurs and princesses they unearth the
past. As weather reporters and restaurant workers they make sense of reality; as monsters
and gremlins they make sense of the unreal.
We promise to make this year even more eventful by offering stimulating and enchanting
activities to the children.
We will continue to provide an enriching learning experience full of fun and excitement.
Let’s go back in time and see what happened in our nursery in the month of December.
December was a month of fun, frolic and festivity. We enjoyed our UAE National Day
celebration and had lots of fun at the Winter Concert.
UAE NATIONAL DAY

Lets take a glimpse of what happened in our classrooms in the month of December.
It’s hard to believe that the first term has already gone by! It has been such a productive
term for the children; engaging in so many new and exciting activities.
We continued with our ‘Healthy Living’ topic where we discussed plants and how they grow.
The children germinated their own seeds in the classroom. They kept them safe from the
birds by individually decorating scarecrows to hang above them! We also had lots of fun
planting flowers in the garden.
In addition to our topic related songs, this month has been filled with some festive
favourites. We had a lot of fun rehearsing for our winter sing-a-long! We would like to say
a big thank you for coming and supporting our children at the sing along session. The
children put on a wonderful performance!
We will be commencing a new topic: ‘Up in the air’. This topic will focus on air travel, birds
and the solar system. We will also include the number 5, the square shape and the colour
purple.
Lastly, we would like to wish you Happy New Year 2014.

Dear Parents,
The time has gone by so quickly and December was such a short and sweet month. We were busy
with our activities like our UAE National Day & Winter Concert. We are so proud of our children for
doing such a great job and we thank you for coming and showing your support. We made different
festive ornaments to decorate our classroom and nursery. We also learned about number 4, the
green colour and the star shape. Thank you too for your contribution for the party food .
In January, we will begin our new topic ‘Up in the Air’. The children will learn about air transport
such as aeroplanes, helicopters, rockets, hot air balloons; animals that fly like birds and butterflies;
the solar system like sky, clouds, moon, stars and planets and so much more.
They will be introduced to new songs that are topic related and we will listen to different stories as
well. The children will be introduced to number 5, the square shape and the purple colour. It will be
a fruitful and exciting month for the children.
We wish you all a Happy New Year!

Ladybirds & Sunflowers
Dear Parents,
What a fabulous first term we have had. The children made us so proud when they performed at
the winter concert. They all were wonderful.
They also enjoyed the topic ‘Healthy Living’ and are now aware of ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ food .It’s
been a busy and a fantastic term for both the Ladybirds and the Sunflowers.
In January our new topic will be ‘Up in the air’. We will be looking at air transport e.g. airplanes,
helicopters, rockets etc. and the children will also be making 3 D models. We will also be looking at
other things we see in the air for e.g. birds, clouds, stars and the different shapes of the moon. We
will travel in outer space and have a look at the planets using our imagination. We will create and
design our own space centre.
We will be singing songs such as ‘Zoom, zoom, zoom, were going to the moon’, ‘Two little dickey
birds’ and ‘5 little space men’. We will be engaging in sensory play and will create moon dust made
out of corn flour, rice, lentils. We will add a few secret ingredients to make some alien goo too.
During circle times we will be discussing and looking at space and our solar system. We will be
counting stars and planets and looking at different patterns and shapes of our solar system.
In our music and movement sessions the children will be flying like airplanes, spinning like
helicopters and flapping their hands like birds. This will be another month full of fun and learning.
Our new number will be number five, the colour we will learn is purple and our new shape is square.
We look forward to another great month in the Ladybirds and Sunflowers classrooms.
BUMBLEBEES AND
BUTTERFLIES
Happy New Year! We hope 2014 is full of health and happiness to all. December was a busy month as
we were engaged in many festive activities.
We were filled with the UAE spirit to celebrate this special day. Children came dressed in the UAE
National Dress or the colours of the UAE flag. We made our own flags to celebrate the UAE 42 nd
National Day and the children had the opportunity to look at the landmarks of Dubai, the desert
and city life in the U.A.E.
We are sure your children made you proud with their fantastic performance at our Winter Concert.
Our winter party was very successful and the children had fun playing traditional party games such
as passing the parcel and musical statues. We would like to convey our thanks to parents for your
continued support.
During the month of January we will be looking at the theme ‘Up in the air’. We will be exploring air
transport, space, weather, birds and a fantasy world of dragons and fairies to capture their
imagination.
A wonderful benefit of play is that it is a great way to help children develop self-regulation, waiting
a turn, sharing materials, asking questions, modifying their own behaviour, imitating positive
behaviour and positive peer influences.
There are so many social benefits too, every child is successful during play and that can be a huge
boost in self-esteem for children who struggle in other areas. Children also develop empathy, solve
problems, take on other perspectives – so many wonderful skills!
A wee reminder for parents who have not yet sent in a photo of your ‘family’, I request you to do so.
These photos are displayed all year and the children are proud to show them to their friends.
In the Pre-KG classes we aim to make your child as independent as possible in order to help them be
ready for the next step to school. Please provide food that they are able to eat themselves with
minimal assistance and clothes they can easily remove when using the toilet. Below are the areas of
learning for the month of January:
Jolly Phonic letters: h, r & m
Shapes: Crescent
Colour: Black & Grey
Numbers: 6 & 7
Concepts: Up & Down
Celebrations: Australia Day, Chinese New Year
(Parents are very welcome to come in and share their knowledge of celebrations from their home country)
NEXT TOPIC
The topic for January is ‘Up in the Air’. The children will learn about the different things we see up
in the air such as hot air balloons, air transport and birds. We will also talk about the Solar system,
astronauts and space rockets. I am sure the children will have an eventful month ahead!
