Unconscious choking Adult/Child 1. Activate the EAP 2. Size-up the scene 3. Perform a primary assessment ensure that the victim is on a firm, flat surface (floor or table) 4. IF at any time the chest does not clearly rise: 5. Re-tilt the head and give another ventilation. 6. If breaths still do not make the chest clearly rise, give 30 chest thrusts. a. Place the heel of the one hand on the center of the chest b. Place the other hand on top of the first hand and compress the chest 30 times. i. Adult chest compressions about 2 inches ii. Child chest compressions about 2 inches c. Each chest thrusts should be a distinct attempt to dislodge the object d. Compress at a rate of 100 compressions per minute 7. Look for an object inside the victim’s mouth Grasp the tongue and lower jaw between your thumb and fingers, and lift the jaw 8. If an object is seen take it out. Slide your finger along the inside of the victim’s cheek, using a hooking motion to sweep out the object 9. Replace the resuscitation mask and give 2 ventilations a. If the breaths still do not make the chest rise repeat steps 6-9 b. If the breaths make the chest clearly rise check for a breathing & pulse for no more than 10 sec. i. If unconscious but breathing put in recovery position ii. IF unconscious and no breathing but there is a pulse: give ventilations iii. If unconscious and no breathing or pulse: Begin CPR Things to remember for infant: o Chest compressions 1 ½ inches o Use two or three fingers for compressions just below nipple line o Keep other hand on forehead during compressions
