ENGINEERING SURVEY CADD TECHNICIAN
NATURE OF WORK
This is sub-professional work in the operation and maintenance of computer aided drafting and
design equipment for the production of computer generated survey drawings.
Work involves responsibility for operating standard software packages with speed and accuracy and
in performing routine office and field work in conjunction with normal surveying activities. Work
may include acting as survey party chief during intermittent periods. Instructions are provided by a
superior; however, an employee in this class is expected to perform the more routine tasks
independently. Work is reviewed through conversation, observation and inspection while in progress
and upon completion.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Operates software capable of receiving and processing field data for topographic, cross section,
alignment, line and grade runs and other engineering and land survey work.
Performs disk, file, and software management and back-up tasks.
Prepares drawings and checks for accuracy.
Writes metes and bounds descriptions and checks for accuracy.
Performs survey calculations and checks for accuracy.
Researches and compiles existing engineering and survey records.
Communicates with project managers regarding the progress of work and the detail requirements of
the work task.
Plots cross sections, site features, and boundary surveys from field data.
May act as survey chief for short intermittent periods as assigned.
May perform layout work for construction of streets, sidewalks, curbs, water distribution and
wastewater collection lines, buildings and other City facilities.
Maintains clear and concise field notes showing lines, angles, distances, chords, traverses, elevations
and quantities; checks plat books.
Performs related work as assigned.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the use and operations of surveying software packages for the production of maps
from survey field notes.

Some knowledge of the use and adjustment of surveying instruments, such as transit and levels.
Knowledge of land survey equipment, techniques, nomenclature and symbols.
Knowledge of engineering maps and records.
Knowledge of mathematics and ability to perform accurate calculations.
Skill in the use and care of engineering survey instruments and tools.
Ability to perform precise survey work, read instruments and gauges, make engineering
computations and reduce field notes.
Ability to understand and work from oral and written instructions and sketches.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduation or GED equivalency.
Some college or technical school training is preferred.
Experience in the operation of survey instruments, such as transits and levels, and computer aided
drafting and design software for survey map production.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida driver's license.
