2006 ACT Student’s Communication Challenge PRIA (ACT) PR Students’ Awards for Excellence STATEMENT OF PURPOSE WHO CAN ENTER The PRIA (ACT) Student Awards is designed to develop public relations students into professional practitioners. The competition is aimed at students in their final year of a tertiary course at UC and CIT. The eligibility criteria is a follows: This award is part of the PRIA (ACT) annual Awards for Excellence program. It recognises that the ACT has a number of tertiary courses where students are developing the skills and knowledge in PR practice. • A student or a student team of up to three participants who are enrolled as undergraduates or advanced diploma students in a UC or CIT communication program. The purpose of including a Student Award in the ACTs Awards for Excellence is to: • Students who are employed full-time in the communications industry will not be eligible to enter. • This challenge does not include internship projects. • • Highlight the application of learnings. importance of public relations practical students’ Harness the skills, energy and enthusiasm as well as the capacity to practically apply their knowledge and skills to assist community organisations in their tasks. ABOUT THE CHALLENGE • The challenge is designed to give students an opportunity to work as a team and produce communications solutions for a real client that has requested PR assistance. • The PRIA (ACT) has partnered with UC and CIT to develop this competition to assist local charities/non-for-profits who wish to access free PR assistance from a student team. • Provide students with an opportunity to gain practical experience. • Encourage high standards of public relations practical application in a mentored environment by public relations professionals. • Encourage students to participate through practical application in a professional industry. • Encourage healthy competition and striving for excellence among public relations students. Each student team will be given a brief to assist a local organisation (a charity or non-for-profit) with their PR needs. • Each team will be provided with a mentor to assist them throughout the project. • Student teams will be required to work with that organisation and develop a strategy and implementation plan based on the client organisation’s specific communications need. • UC students can work on this during the semesters or in the semester breaks. • Specific arrangements will be made for students from the CIT. • • Develop close relationships between students and professional public relations practitioners by providing the students with the opportunity to receive feedback on their practical work by a judging panel of representative public relations practitioners. • Provide valuable assistance to community organisations. (This assistance will be on a voluntary basis and not involve remuneration.) [Note. The Student Category in the Awards for Excellence is an ACT award and will not be part of the National Golden Target Awards.
