Baby with
Biliary Atresia
Makes
Successful
Journey to
Adulthood
It was during one of their frequent
visits to a hospital caring for their son,
Matthew, that Randy and Ken Rosiello
discovered the American Liver
Foundation. Searching for answers to
her baby’s ailment, Randy found a
computer and the American Liver
Foundation as well. “I was at
a loss as I lay next to Matthew in the
hospital room,” Randy recalls. “I got
on my computer and—ta-da!—there
you were.” Together, the Rosiellos and
the American Liver Foundation have
supported Matthew in his remarkable
battle against liver disease.
The family’s long journey began in September
1989, when Randy and Ken were carrying their
five-week-old son out of the church after his
baptism. A woman stopped them to say that
their baby was beautiful, but that he “looked
yellow.” Randy and Ken didn’t understand, but
something told them to take little Matt to his
pediatrician the next day.
The pediatrician instantly recognized Matthew’s
jaundice as the indication of the serious
condition, biliary atresia. The additional tests
supported the suspicion that Matt had biliary
atresia and he needed immediate surgery to
help him live.
2
Facts about
Biliary Atresia
Biliary atresia is a life
threatening liver
condition in which the
network of tubes and
ducts that carries bile
from the liver into the
small intestines is
damaged or missing.
Biliary atresia strikes
one in 10,000
newborns and is most
successfully treated
when diagnosed prior
to eight weeks of age.
Matthew’s surgery
was a success, but
the hard part of the
Rosiellos’ journey
was just beginning.
For the next two
years, Matthew was
in and out of the
hospital due to
complications and
infections. At one
point, Matt had
emergency surgery
when a part of his
bowel developed an
obstruction that
required an intense
modification of his original procedure. “This
surgery took over eight hours and three doctors
to complete,” says Randy.
The Rosiellos are very involved with their local

For the Rosiellos, this is an
opportunity to share with others the
help and hope that they have
received through the American Liver
Foundation. “We can’t thank the
American Liver Foundation enough,”
Randy says. “The American Liver
Foundation is like a bright ray of
sunshine in our lives.”
American Liver Foundation chapter. “Matt wants
to help people who need someone to talk to
about liver disease or biliary atresia. Ken and I
want to support other families that have been
diagnosed with what we have been through,”
says Randy, who recently started a support
group for mothers of children with biliary atresia.
In addition, the Rosiello family participates in the
Greater New York Division’s Liver Life Walk in
Jersey City.
Matt developed an interest in music at 15
and he is now a professional DJ with his
own mixing equipment and fledgling music
production business. He also works part-time
and is a full-time student at the College of
Staten Island.
For the Rosiellos, this is an opportunity to share
with others the help and hope that they have
received through the American Liver Foundation.
“We can’t thank the American Liver Foundation
enough,” Randy says. “The American Liver
Foundation is like a bright ray of sunshine in
our lives.”

Biliary Atresia Study
May Lead to
New Therapies
Joshua R. Friedman, MD, PhD, is leading
a research study to investigate the mystery
of biliary atresia from an entirely new
direction. After years of confusion and
debate surrounding this disease, Dr.
Friedman is studying changes in small
molecules called microRNAs, or miRNA,
which play a major role in regulating the
way our genes are expressed. Dr.
Friedman observed that nothing is known
about the function of miRNA in biliary
atresia. The goal of his project is to fill this
hole in the existing research.
Dr. Friedman’s team has performed a
large-scale survey of miRNA in models
of biliary atresia and found that the
progression of the disease leads to
significant changes in a specific set of
miRNA. Dr. Friedman hypothesizes that,
within this set, specific miRNAs contribute
to the development of biliary atresia. If this
is the case, then treatments may feasibly
be developed to target these particular
miRNAs.

journey into education
Education Milestones
The American Liver Foundation achieved
significant programmatic milestones in 2008.
Highlights of FY 2008 programmatic
successes include:
• An 8% increase in total number of
education program attendees.
• A 27% increase in average attendance
at education programs.
• A 39% increase in program participant
knowledge.
• A 47% increase in total number of
support program attendees.
• A 13% increase in the number of
outreach programs.
• An 84% increase in individuals helped
through outreach programs.
Additionally, the American Liver Foundation
reached a greater number of participants
through its education, support, and outreach
programs compared with 2007.
Education
During FY 2008, the American Liver Foundation
reached more than 133,000 individuals through
education programs, support services and
outreach activities.
The American Liver Foundation education programs target three populations: general public,
patients with liver disease and their families, and
healthcare and social service professionals.
Change in knowledge is a key outcome measuring the impact of our education programs. In FY
2008, 70% of attendees reported an increase in
knowledge after an the American Liver Foundation education program. The average increase in
knowledge was 39%.
Special Program Highlights
Treatment Choices Initiative (TCI) is an education
program targeted to individuals who have or
are at high risk of hepatitis C infection. In 2008,
the American Liver Foundation reached individuals with or at high risk of hepatitis C infection
through 50 programs offered at communitybased agencies.
4
Managing Your Medications
The third component of the Liver Wellness
Initiative, Managing Your Medications, which
employs targeted education materials and
an interactive website to discuss responsible
use of medications for liver health. Managing
Your Medications addresses the responsible
use of over the counter and prescription
medications, as well as supplements and
alternative therapies.
Research
More than $1 million was provided to 13
Research Program Awards recipients in 2008.
Three Liver Scholar Awards, two Special
Research Initiative Awards and eight Postdoctoral Research Fellowships provided up to three
years of funding to research scientists studying
treatment and cures for liver disease.
Advocacy
In 2008, the American Liver Foundation had
several advocacy achievements, including
gubernatorial proclamations for Hepatitis Awareness Month in seven states and two mayoral
proclamations. The American Liver Foundation
helped to pass state legislations ensuring
broader access to care for people with liver
disease and increased funding for liver disease
and prevention education.

A Nurse’s Journey from
Patient to Proponent
Gina Marie Pollichino’s
journey with liver disease began in 1994
when she was given a
tainted blood product
to treat an inherited
immune deficiency.
She developed severe
hepatitis C. She recovered from this acute attack but still struggles
with chronic hepatitis C.
In 1997, Gina Pollichino’s journey with the
American Liver Foundation began when she
started two hepatitis C support groups, using
her skills as an RN to educate and counsel
patients about this disease. She found there
were misconceptions, discrimination and an
overriding stigma about liver disease that still
exists today. Treatment can be so difficult, and
learning how to cope from those who have
been through it can help a patient to stay on
treatment. “It has been very rewarding for me
American Liver Foundation 2008 Annual Report
on many levels to be involved in running support groups,” Gina says. “It’s been wonderful
to see the progress that’s been made in
respect to treatment success. We went from
no one responding to treatment and side
effects not being fully addressed, to approximately half now responding positively to treatment. While side effects are difficult, they are
being managed better.”
Gina is a member of the Board of Directors of
the Greater New York Division and has served
on several national committees. “I’ve seen
amazing changes happen at the American
Liver Foundation and I’m happy with the
direction we are going,” Gina says. The
success of the American Liver Foundation is
important to Gina, and to the entire community that lives with liver disease every day.
“I will continue to do all I can to pave the way
for the future so that liver disease will be cured
someday, or maybe just a well-managed
condition,” she says.
Until then, the American Liver Foundation will
continue to provide much needed support for
those being treated for the disease with the
invaluable help of volunteers like Gina.

funding the mission
Special Events
In 2008 the American Liver Foundation
introduced three new national fundraising
campaigns known as the American Liver
Foundation Signature Events. These three
events are the cornerstone of the organization’s field-based fundraising initiatives and
brought a consistent brand and name to
events happening from coast to coast.
The uniformity provided by these events
will help to further spread awareness of the
American Liver Foundation and guarantee
that more time and effort can be spent
furthering the American Liver Foundation
mission to promote liver disease education,
research, and advocacy.
Liver Life Walk
The Liver Life
Walk is the
American Liver
Foundation’s
fastest growing
fundraising
campaign. In
2008 tens of
thousands of people all over the country came
together to take a stand, and a walk, in the fight
against liver disease. Walks are a great way to
get the community involved because anyone
can participate despite their age or physical ability. With more than 30 Liver Life Walks taking
place this year, the American Liver Foundation
supporters participated in the largest coordinated effort in the organization’s history.
Together Liver Life Walk participants helped
generate over $1.2 million to promote liver
disease research, education, and advocacy.
6
Flavors
While Flavors
isn’t a new
concept for the
American Liver
Foundation,
2008 marked
the first time
that all 16 divisions planned and hosted this
event. As the signature culinary event of the
American Liver Foundation, Flavors is a true
gourmet experience and represents a reinvention of the traditional charity gala.
At each event top chefs from across the local
region assemble for a night of elaborate table
décor, exquisite food, fine wine, and a great
cause. Each chef has his or her own table and
cooking station with the responsibility of providing linens, flowers, theme-related objects, or
any other items to make each unique. All food is
prepared right in front of the guests, who enjoy
at least five courses all while learning a few tips
from the experts. All told, this unique dining
experience generated more than $3 million for
the American Liver Foundation in 2008.
Liver Life Challenge
The Liver Life Challenge brings together
training teams all
across the country to
prepare and participate in some of the
nation’s leading endurance events. The
American Liver
Foundation supporters have conquered everything from marathons to mountain climbs as a
part of this program, and generated millions of
dollars in the fight against liver disease. From
novice to veteran, there is a place for everyone
on the Liver Life Challenge team. Run for
Research, a Boston marathon training team,
is the organization’s single largest event and
generated more than $1.1 million in 2008.

Team Spotlight
Western Slope
Walkers on a Journey
to Raise Awareness
and Funds
The Western Slope Walkers team has been
a driving force in raising funds and spreading the word about the Liver Life Walk.
Team captain Michael Hartman, a liver transplant recipient, relates why he and his family
are involved in the walk: "It's a way for me
and my family to
give back to the
American Liver
Foundation. I wasn't
able to help out in
the past because of
my health, but now
that I am healthy, I
want to be involved
in giving back all the
help that The American Liver Foundation has
given to me."
Jason Hartman, son of Michael and a Most
American Liver Foundation 2008 Annual Report
Valuable Player (MVP), agreed to personally
match the first $1,500 in contributions that
his team raised. MVPs are a very important
part of the walk. They commit to raising
$1,000 in pledges and receive special recognition during the closing ceremony. Jason's
motivation for fundraising stems from his father's health and subsequent transplant. He
explains that without his dad, he would not be
aware of the grave effects of liver disease, and
for him, this event is an opportunity to educate
others and save lives.

Naomi and Paul Herman
Two Moms Team
Up to Create
Pittsburgh Chapter
Seven years ago, the words primary
sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) were not part
of Naomi Herman’s vocabulary. The Pittsburgh resident knew very little about the
liver and about the support the American
Liver Foundation could provide for those
with liver disease and their families. All that
changed when one of her daughters was
diagnosed with PSC.
Naomi was not aware of an organization in
the Pittsburgh area that focused on liver disease, so she began an effort to raise money,
to educate people and to get involved. She
asked her daughter’s hepatologist and gastroenterologist to pass along her phone number to anyone who might be interested in
8
Joanne and Stephen Grieme
helping with Naomi’s volunteer effort.
It wasn’t long before Naomi received a call
from Joanne Grieme, whose youngest son
was also diagnosed with PSC. The two moms
met with staff from the American Liver Foundation as well as local physicians and after a
two-year journey of extensive legwork and
organizational planning, in 2006 they formed a
chapter in Pittsburgh. Naomi Herman became
president and Joanne’s business skills were
well suited for chair of Flavors of Pittsburgh.
For five years Naomi and Joanne worked
tirelessly for the American Liver Foundation. This fiscal year, Joanne became president and Naomi continues to help with
Flavors, the Walk, education programs, and
conducting phone interviews with patients for
the Love Your Liver campaign.
“When Joanne and I met, we realized we
could make a difference,” Naomi says. “We
could not sit back and allow things to happen
to our kids; we had to impact the situation. We
have found strength in each other and in the
support system we built.”

Beth Kissinger’s Journey:
Running Marathons
to Honor Brothers
with Liver Disease
Most of us think that a qualified, experienced marathon runner needs little inspiration to cross the finish line. Many would envy
a woman who has three beautiful children, a
husband and home, as well as the drive to
run many races and marathons. After meeting Beth Kissinger, most of us would offer
her a standing ovation for her courageous
personal battle against a liver disease that
killed one brother and forced another to
receive a transplant, and sends her to the
doctor regularly.
Beth’s journey has led her to run seven
marathons to help raise funds on behalf of
the American Liver Foundation, which has
supported Beth and her family along the way.
She joined the New England Run For Research
Team, a part of the Liver Life Challenge program
and in three years raised over $14,000.
Beth grew up as one of eight children in a close
knit family in Maine. It was not until this past
decade that the family bonds were put to the
ultimate series of tests. Steve, the oldest, was
diagnosed with a rare liver and kidney disease
called primary hyperoxaluria (PH1). PH1 is a
genetic liver and kidney disorder that can lead to
kidney failure. It can be fatal if not treated in its
early stages and can often require a liver and
kidney transplant for the patient.
Beth and her family learned that Steve’s illness
was not an isolated incident. Since both their
parents were carriers of the gene, the children
were unknowingly at risk. PH1 is rarely ever
caught as late in life as it was with Steve. Steve
adamantly encouraged his siblings to test for the
same disorder while he was fighting his own
battle to survive. Only Beth and her brother, Eric,
tested positive for PH1. Steve, 49, was too ill to
make the transplant list and passed away in 2003.
“Steve did a lot for all of us, even in the end,”
says Beth. “If it weren’t for Steve, I wouldn’t be
as healthy as I am today and my brother, Eric,
would probably not be alive.”
In 2005, Eric went into renal failure. In July 2006,
Eric received a kidney and liver transplant and is
now living a successful life.
Beth practices what she has always believed—
family comes first. She transitioned to a part
time job to allow her to spend more time with
daughters Katie, Megan and Lily. Her running
helps the girls see that she is healthy; it also
helps Beth to cope with the weight of the last
few years of sadness in her family.
Beth ran the 2007 Boston Marathon® in honor
of both her brother, Steve, and also the anonymous donor who gave her brother, Eric, a new
liver. She is running a journey in the hope that no
one will ever have to say goodbye to their loved
ones because of liver disease.

Journey to a Cure
Promising Medical Researchers
Receive American Liver Foundation Support
The American Liver Foundation understands that in order to have a future without liver disease, they
must have a future with top scientists committed to researching a cure. That means supporting
today’s most promising medical researchers. Nam-Joon Cho, PhD, of Stanford University is one
such scientist. As the 2008 winner of the Herman Lopata Memorial Hepatitis Postdoctoral
Fellowship, he brings his non-traditional background and expertise on engineering design principles
to a very complex project that involves creating 3D models of liver cells. It is his hope that his project
will have long term benefits, including “efficient artificial liver support systems and an increase in the
liver tissue available for transplantation.” Cho also recognizes the role his grant is playing in his
development as a scientist, saying “I think that the American Liver Foundation is really passionate
about developing individuals with the potential to make significant advances in liver research but
who need additional mentoring time to get to the point where they can successfully manage their
own labs as young assistant professors.”
