nation. Corvallis is located 90 miles south of Portland and is an hour’s drive to the beautiful Pacific
Coast or the Cascade Mountain Range. Oregon State University is Oregon’s leading public research
university, with 12 colleges and more than 200 undergraduate degree programs. The University

INTO is an organization working in partnership with leading Universities and investing in the
development of world-class international student centers. Each INTO Center is managed by a joint
venture management board in which INTO and the partner university are equal shareholders. Since
2006, INTO has successfully launched partnerships with universities in the United Kingdom, United
States and Asia. The Oregon State University Center is the first in the US. It was officially established in
October 2008.
Reporting relationship
The Director of Academic Programs is an OSU employee and reports to the Vice Provost for
International Programs (VPIP) with a solid line, and to the INTO OSU Executive Director with a dotted
line.
Job overview
The Director of Academic Programs is a 1.0 FTE, 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position at
OSU. Directs academic programs for INTO OSU. Develops long-term staffing and operational plans in
partnership with university and INTO OSU leadership. Responsible for budgets and expenses, allocation
of resources and management for assigned unit of operation in support of OSU's goals and mission.
Establishes, implements and evaluates organization's goals/policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Academic Programs provides leadership to all the academic programs and personnel
within the INTO OSU Center and reports to the VPIP, as well as working on a daily operational level with
the INTO OSU Executive Director to maintain the academic and financial health of the academic and
intensive English programs. The Director of Academic Programs will have overall operational
responsibility for the management and development of teaching programs, academic managers and
related resource within the Center.
Decision Making/Guidelines
Oversees the development and delivery of academic programs offered by INTO OSU.
Oversees the teaching staff and administrative faculty who are directly involved with the delivery of the
programs.
Works collaboratively with the Program Managers to carry out the effective and efficient delivery of
courses, and plan and evaluate the program in accordance with the mission.
The Director of Academic Programs has overall supervision of faculty teaching and/or administering the
course offerings, and oversees the personnel decisions of the program faculty in consultation with the
VPIP and Executive Director. This position also manages the academic team budgets while the final
budgetary authority rests with the INTO OSU Board.

20% of FTE is focused on lead work or supervision. Up to 12 employees are directly supervised by the
Director.
30% Work with Executive Director and the Vice Provost for International Programs to provide operational
level leadership to advance INTO OSU goals regarding enrollments, retention, quality and integration.
This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
 Contribute to the formulation of the annual budget and the allocation and regulation of
expenditure in the Center.
 Monitor the Center's financial performance through the efficient management of teaching
resources, both those contracted independently and through various OSU departments,
including teaching hours and class sizes.
 Participate on the INTO OSU Management team to manage the daily operations of the Center.
 Participate on the INTO OSU Director team to provide strategic direction and leadership for the
INTO OSU Center.
 Pursue opportunities for integration and collaboration between faculty and staff within the INTO
OSU Center
 Work in close cooperation with the Finance, Admissions, Academic Support and IT Managers to
coordinate in areas that impact academic staff and students such as registration, enrollment
management, etc.
 Report to the Vice Provost International Programs, the INTO OSU Board and the INTO OSU
Executive Director on development of new programs, curriculum, accreditation and academic
integrity/standards.
 Work closely with all appropriate staff at the INTO OSU Center and at OSU to ensure that
Pathway students receive appropriate academic advising and direction on meeting progression
requirements to OSU.
 Liaise with INTO field staff and agents regarding academic programs, student academic issues,
special programs, training and recruiting.
 Serve as an ambassador for the Center meeting with groups, agents, sponsors, students and
other constituents to communicate and implement long- and short-term goals of the Center and
expand upon financially viable opportunities for contracts with groups.
 Contribute to marketing and recruitment through participation in events in the US and Overseas.
 Provide leadership for academic personnel in the INTO OSU Center.
25% Management of the English language portfolio of programs at the INTO OSU Center. This includes,
but is not limited to, the following key areas:
 Promoting and achieving student success and student satisfaction during and after INTO OSU
academic programs.
 Lead Academic Management Team meetings.
 Work to maintain standards set by the major professional bodies for Intensive English programs
with a focus on standards for curriculum and student achievement. Direct the accreditation
application process for the INTO OSU center with appropriate accrediting agencies.
 Collaborate with the INTO OSU Executive Director and Program Managers to ensure the
integration of language and content courses. Establish and maintain quality standards and stay
abreast of current trends in the ESL field to ensure best practices.
 Work with the Academic Program Managers to oversee quality, standards and effective and
efficient delivery of the INTO OSU academic programs.
20% Work with the Executive Director and the Vice Provost for International Programs to build strategic
links between INTO OSU and the OSU campus





Serve on OSU committees and/or task forces at the request of the Vice Provost.
Report to OSU bodies on all matters relating to INTO OSU academic programs and its students
as requested.
Develop and maintain relationships with International Programs and other campus stakeholders.
Provide informational and developmental training pertaining to INTO OSU programs and
students.
Pursue and develop opportunities for integration between INTO OSU and OSU at faculty, staff
and student levels.
20% Build and sustain a performance-based team environment:
 Maintain a positive and productive work environment with encourages teamwork among the
academic team and all employees of the INTO OSU Center.
 Perform annual performance reviews of faculty, professional faculty and classified staff who are
direct reports. This includes the Associate Director of Academic Programs, the Program
Managers, the Manager of Accreditation and Program Assessment and the Progression
Advisors.
 Coordinate, and ensure follow through of the hiring, orientation, evaluation and performance of
faculty and staff in consultation with the VPIP and INTO OSU Executive Director, within OSU
policies and in coordination with INTO OSU policies.
 Oversee the development of the academic team structure to meet the needs of OSU, the INTO
OSU Center and its students effectively and efficiently.
 Serve as a role model for working with and advising students, maintaining collegial relationships
and high professional standards in all matters.
 Work collaboratively with the University Administrative Business Center, the Office of Equity and
Inclusion, the OSU Ombuds Office, OSU Human Resources, OSU Legal Counsel and the office
of Academic Affairs to ensure that human resource issues are within OSU guidelines and
policies.
5% Duties as needed/assigned. For example,
 working with the Vice Provost for International Programs and/or with the INTO OSU Executive
Director to develop new programs
 to support and develop other Centers and potential Centers in the INTO University Partnership
network.
Qualifications and experience
Required
 Master's Degree
 Committed to OSU's goals and strategies for expanding international programs.
 A record of success in international programs.
 Significant experience as a manager.
 Demonstrated success as a manager and leader.
 Ability to present information clearly and effectively to a range of audiences.
 Experience in academic program design and quality assurance.
 Experience in promoting and encouraging professional development in an academic team
 Commercially astute, with the ability to reconcile the twin imperatives of delivering quality
programs and working in a commercial environment.

Preferred
 Significant experience as a manager in an ESL or INTO ESL environment.
 Master's in Teaching English as a Second Language or closely related field
 PhD in TESOL/Linguistics/related field
 Demonstrated success as an ESL teacher at HE level.
 Demonstrated success in management and development of an ESL program at HE level.
