The school introduced the case method of teaching, keeping in mind the need for a challenging and relevant curriculum. SDSB also carries out rigorous economic and management research through its research centres such as the Strategic Sectors Research Centre (SSRC), Social Enterprise Development Centre (SEDC) and the Case Research Centre (CRC). SDSB maintains a close relationship with the business world, which acts as a source of advice and information. This interaction not only helps to keep the curriculum relevant to the needs of business organisations, but also ensures that the students are exposed to the dynamics of the corporate world. Business leaders actively interact with both faculty and students through frequent visits, seminars and as guest speakers, enriching the classroom experience with their perspectives. Nadeem uz Zaman MBA 1997 Group Sparkling Marketing Director for Eurasia & Africa Group The Coca-Cola Company I had heard that LUMS students are very competitive but what surprised me the most was how supportive they were. Everybody always wanted to try new things and learn from each other. My two years at LUMS were memorable. My classmates came from all around Pakistan from different fields and with varying experiences and this contributed to the class discussions, which were the most interesting and enjoyable part of academics. Overall it was an amazing experience that built business knowledge, helped shape positive behaviour to be ready for practical pressures of life and most importantly provided a forum to become part of a great community. Additionally, industry linkages are strengthened by the involvement of faculty in teaching and training at the Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC), which caters to more than 2,000 senior executives and managers annually. SDSB aims to provide for the varying educational needs of a culturally diverse and geographically dispersed student body with the goal of preparing students academically, personally and professionally for successful careers and to give them opportunities to make a difference. Tariq Saadat MBA 1997 Chairman, Acamar Group LUMS liberated me. It made me think higher, reach further, dream bigger. The biggest impact was the belief that I can do it! If others in the world could make a business empire I could too. In real life, I did go on to establish from scratch, three companies selling to five continents in over twenty countries. For this I got three successive awards over the last four years from the Prime Minister of Pakistan. That’s the great thing about the case study method; you act as the owner of the company and by solving the case study issues you learn to successfully handle and manage large corporations. By debating the case study in the class you see the pros and cons of your decisions. The intense debates, the group projects, the extreme competition with your classmates, the late night snacks, the early morning crash studies before the case, the friendly yet demanding faculty, a world class campus, Harvard University taught case studies, all add to the LUMS experience! 3 ABOUT THE PROGRAMME MBA programme at LUMS exposes students to academic rigor and high practical relevance. SDSB MBA links theory to practice, bringing the industrial experience to the classroom. The students are exposed to well-planned elements such as projects, internships and exchange programmes to realise their own potential. SUMMER ORIENTATION PROGRAMME (SOP) The SOP brings together students from diverse academic backgrounds and prepares them to deal with the challenges of the rigorous MBA programme. The SOP is offered in August, prior to the official commencement of classes. It aims at easing the transitional stage of students into the regular MBA by providing fundamental skill enhancement modules in communication, business mathematics, accounting, computer applications and statistics, thus bringing all the students from different backgrounds to one level. THE MBA CURRICULUM The SDSB MBA is a two-year programme based on a series of core and elective courses. Year I In year I, all students are expected to complete eleven core courses that are designed to give concepts that provide the backbone of general management education. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Marketing Management Financial Management Organisational Behaviour Financial Reporting and Analysis Critical Thinking and Managerial Communication Operations Management Managerial Economics Managerial Accounting and Control Systems Islamic Ethics (half course) Business Development and Strategy (half course) Business Development and Economy (half course) Decisions Modelling for Managers (half course) Statistical Analysis for Management (half course) Leadership and Social Responsibility (half course) Sarah Beg MBA 1993 Manager SCB Way, Standard Chartered Bank My MBA experience was probably one of the best times of my life: carefree yet jam packed with action filled classes, cases and participative debates! I learnt from many people: my peers, my teachers and all the patrons of LUMS, and without a doubt, my degree and my association with this prestigious institution opened up many doors for job opportunities. For this and much more, I am ever indebted to my alma mater. 500+ Cases taught during 2 years of MBA 75% International Cases 25% Local Cases Note: The electives listed only include the courses offered in the academic year 2012-13. These abilities have helped me tremendously in my corporate/investment banking career, be it negotiating with my clients, or working with my more experienced seniors. The case study system allows you to think like a CEO in a simulated environment, thereby helping develop your individual decision making process. I highly recommend the experience to anyone interested in the experience of a lifetime.
