Classifying Matter: Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Laura Thomas 2012 Notes: Find the frame notes, write down key words as we go through the powerpoint. Matter Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is composed of elements The main phases of states of matter are Classification of Matter Matter is classified as an element, compound, or a mixture. Oxygen (O2) is an element Water is a compound H20 Salad is a mixture Elements Elements are represented by circles or dots. The dots that are the same size and color are the same element. Scientific Representation Top line are molecules, bottom line are compounds Elements Elements are the basic building blocks of matter An element is pure substance that cannot be broken down or changed into another substance. An element is made of one type of atom. Each element is represented by a chemical symbol. Molecules and Compounds A molecule consists of two or more atoms of the same element, or different elements, that are chemically bonded together. An example of a molecule is Has a chemical formula (elemental symbols tell element and number tells number of atoms) Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically Compounds Compounds are molecules made up of atoms of two or more different elements bound together. Made of elements in a specific ratio that is always the same Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically Mixtures A mixture is made of elements that are held together by physical forces, not chemical. No chemical change takes place A mixture can usually be physically separated back into its original components An example is fruit salad Chem4kids.com Can you identify the following? You will be shown a series of photos. Tell if each photo represents an item composed of an element, compound, or mixture. PUT THE ITEM IN YOUR NOTES Review: An element contains just one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. A mixture contains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically. A mixture can contain both elements and compounds. Element, Compound, or Mixture? Rocks Element, Compound, or Mixture? Rocks Element, Compound, or Mixture? Copper Element, Compound, or Mixture? Get 1 m&m on the way out!! M &M’s ??? YEA!!!!!!!!! Find your m&m’s in a cup There are 2 per table. With your shoulder partner, decide how to represent: 1. Element 2. Compound 3. Mixtures In your journal… Draw in your journal what these 3 look like with m&m’s 1. Element 2. Compound 3. Mixtures Draw then label each picture as either elements, compounds or mixture. Tell me how the m&m’s Represent that grouping. Example: This is a mixture. Several elements are represented They are not chemically bonded.
