Review Sheet - Examination #1
Winter 2014
Lange
The following are some suggestions as to topics to spend time studying. This list or any list like it cannot
be expected to cover each and every topic possible for the upcoming exam. However, it should give you
a reasonable idea as to the breadth of material. My suggestion is to use this list as a way to help you
organize your notes and your reading. “***” indicates material not covered in lecture that you need to
read independently in your text.
Chapter 1
What is neurobiology?
general characteristics of the nervous system
comparison of the neuron to the stereotypical
cell
How is a neuron both an electrical message
device and a chemical message
device?
levels of organization in the nervous system
history of neuroscience as a new discipline
The Society for Neuroscience
early indications of the study of the brain
key historical scientists involved in the studyof
the brain.... Galen, Vesalius, etc.
the various theories of the function of the
brain proposed by the various
historical figures

Read this article and:
understand the basic goals of the experiment
identify the hypothesis being
tested...what are the various theories
what data did the author obtain?
what are the author’s conclusions?
