WASHINGTON STATE HEAD COACH PAUL WULFF (on the crowd) For Labor Day weekend, probably the very best crowd ever, particularly from our students. It was a great showing and I was very happy to see that. They were ready to go and excited and I haven’t been here forever, but I’d be surprised if there’s been a better student showing on Labor Day weekend. They were a great boost for our players. (on losing Tuel) Jeff obviously broke his collarbone and he’s going to be out and the time table could be anywhere from four to six weeks. We’ll play it as it goes. The good news is that it’s on his non-throwing shoulder and I think that’s a positive and in the mean time we do have the luxury of having a fifth year senior in Marshall Lobbestael to go to, who came in and, as you saw, played very well. This is why we’ve been building a program. You build depth. You build a football team and when you have enough guys, you have guys step up. When you’ve got a program that runs well inside and doesn’t just hang on one guy hopefully that’s where we are at. (on other injuries) We got a couple guys like Travion Smith, who’s been a bright spot in special teams and Darryl Monroe. Those guys both had season ending injuries today. I feel bad for those guys as well, and I think our football team is confident enough and has enough players on this team to be a dang good football team and we are going to go out and play. WASHINGTON STATE STUDENT-ATHLETE RICKEY GALVIN (on first play of this season) I was really excited to get up off the ground after my first carry and just to not be injured. Last year I was really nervous going into my first play, but this time I wouldn’t allow myself to be nervous. I came out there really confident, and that feeling really carried me. (on losing Tuel) It hurt our team a lot, but like the coaches said, we got to go to the next man and hopefully he comes back quickly. (on Lobbestael’s performance) I think he did an excellent job. Just to step up, spur of the moment and that’s a leader to me. WASHINGTON STATE STUDENT-ATHLETE TRAVIS LONG (on losing Tuel) Obviously, it’s a pretty big loss, but Marshall and Conner both played well and you can’t dwell on it too much. You just have to try and fix it with those two guys. Hopefully he’s (Tuel) is able to come back in a few weeks. (on team goals leading up to game) Our main goal was to play fast and to not play hesitant and I think we did that right off the bat. (on starting off 1-0) It’s a good feeling. We need to continue to build off of it. WASHINGTON STATE STUDENT-ATHLETE ALEX HOFFMAN-ELLIS (on interception and touchdown) It was a situation where I was basically reading the tight end and he broke straight to the flats and I cut under him. Pretty much as soon as I caught that ball I knew I was going to go to the house. It was fun. (on defense during first half) I think our guys did a great job of getting lined up and getting their assignments and it starts with the D-line. They did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage and getting a pass-rush with that three man front. That was huge for the defense. We should be on the attack. We should be the hammer, not the nail. It should be a sign of what’s more to come. There are people who will say that we haven’t been tested and throughout the year our tests will grow harder and harder. It’s all about how we handle it throughout the year and how we grow as a team. WASHINGTON STATE STUDENT-ATHLETE MARSHALL LOBBESTAEL (on the hot start and completing first nine passes) The offensive line did a good job of blocking the run and controlling the line of scrimmage to give the quarterbacks a lot of time to throw. Our system today, the plays Coach Sturdy was dialing up, made it easier for us and especially me. He (Coach Sturdy) was calling a good game. A lot of short throws and efficient plays that really helped out a lot. (on staying engaged after Tuel took starting role last season) I still worked out and prepared like I was start. Coach Sturdy has said to stay ready. I’ve been comfortable with my role on the team. (on how to handle that role changing) I don’t think I change now. Coach Sturdy has said to prepare like I’m the starter and that preperation is key. I just have to stay within myself, just relax out there and be one of the eleven.
