Head Coach Gary Kubiak

DENVER BRONCOS TRAINING CAMP QUOTES (8/1/15)
HEAD COACH GARY KUBIAK
On WR Kyle Williams' injury during practice
“It's his Achilles. It wasn't his knee. Unfortunately Kyle's had some injury issues over the past few years. I don't want to jump
ahead right here, but's his Achilles and we'll know more for you after lunch.”
On what he had seen from Kyle Williams at that point
“He had been doing good. He missed a lot of OTAs with hamstrings issues. I think he participated maybe in about three or four of
the OTAs. I know he's had some issues in the last couple of places he's been with some things. He has a lot of talent. He has some
return ability, which is something key for our team. He was doing a good job. He came back in great shape. He was just doing
some return stuff and wasn't even touched. It's one of those things that you just feel bad for him. I know he's very disappointed.
[We will] just try to support him the best we can.”
On why [WR] Demaryius Thomas practiced less today than yesterday
“We have a pattern with him. He practices up to a certain point, then he goes with [Strength and Conditioning Coach] Luke
Richesson, then he comes back and watches practice, and then he goes with Luke. That's kind of his routine right now. He's doing
all the individual-type work, but anytime we're in a team period, or we're in a special-teams period, you'll notice he's
conditioning. When we're in a team period, he's watching and getting all the reps. That’s his pattern right now.”
On the importance of Thomas watching practice
“If DT had been in this offense a long time, and I wasn't worried about assignment stuff like that, I'd probably not be so—that's
probably the number one thing that we have to catch him up on right now. His conditioning looks good. We're just trying to
break him into football stuff the right way. I want him to be able to go to the huddle, hear the call, know what [his] assignment is
and just keep him very much involved instead of not being involved in the huddle at all.”
On [NT] Marvin Austin Jr. leaving practice early
“He just got a little heated at the end. He's fine. [RB Jeremy] Stewart came out of practice. He's got a tight hamstring from
yesterday, and I kind of pulled him out. He wanted to go some more, but he's fine. Those are our three guys.”
On experimenting with the offensive line
“You're going to see that. It's probably going to be an everyday thing. What we're trying to do is take [T Chris] Clark and we want
to take [T] Michael [Schofield], move Michael over to right [tackle] and bring Clark to left [tackle]. We work that way so that Clark
is getting both sides, and we like what Michael has done on the right. Just because of the depth chart, we don't want to get
Michael buried on the left. We want him to able to compete on the other side also.”

On also moving [T] Ryan Harris around the line
“Absolutely. You're going to see that through those four guys all the time.”
On specific players impressing him on the weak side of the line
“I'll tell you something that jumped out to me today. I just told the team. I told them that when they watch the film today, I want
them to watch it backwards. I want them to start with the end of practice instead of the beginning. Probably the majority of the
mistakes we made, with the mistakes we made in practice, most of them are at the end of practice. That tells you you're making
mistakes when you're tired. A guy jumped out at me, [NT] Sly [Sylvester Williams]. I'm looking at one-on-one at the end of
practice, and Sly looks like he had one heck of a period over there. So that's what you looking for. You're looking for guys making
plays when they're dog-tired. That's what you have to do in the league—make them in the third, fourth quarter when the game
is on the line.”
On the progression he looks for each day of practice
“[I'm] just watching them, just that their condition level continues to rise. The next step [is] now the pads [shells] go on
tomorrow. That's a big step, starting to carry your pads. I think guys start to settle down. They know the routine of practice, how
they bounce through practice, how they recover from [one] tough period to the next period and just bringing things together.
Like I said, I like our start. Unfortunately we lost a couple of guys in some individual periods. I like the way we've started. [We]
just have to keep going.”
On his philosophy that quality reps matter more quantity
“It's not about how long you're on the field. It's about how well you practice. I think I kind of learned that through San Francisco
and through [former Denver Broncos Head Coach] Mike [Shanahan]. The game is played in spurts, so I don't like guys standing
around a lot. I want them, when we go, I want to go. Just a belief, if we practice the right way, we can get all our work done in a
lot less time then maybe what we're given. [It's] just something I believe [and I'm] trying to pass on to the guys.”
On [WR] Jordan Norwood
“He has a lot of ability. He's very bright. [He] plays very well inside, the inside position. [He is] kind of an option runner type of
guy. There's a big opportunity for him on this football team. Obviously, I haven't been around him, but my understanding is the
things that held him back a little bit have been injuries and those types of things. Hopefully we keep him healthy.”
On [WR] Jordan Taylor
“Jordan has been impressive for a young player. He's totally different than the other guy I was talking about. He has a long body
and he has a long stride. He can really run. He's got a big catch radius. I think you guys who have been watching practice would
agree that through OTAs he was an impressive player. It's going to be important to see how he does. One of the things he really
has going for him [is] he can handle a lot of information. He knows every spot out here right now, and that's an advantage. I
think he's going to have an excellence chance to help this team.”
On his son, [Player Personnel Assistant] Klein Kubiak, playing with Taylor at Rice University
“They played together. He didn't coach him. They actually played together. I watched him. I watched him practice. I watched him
play when I would go to the games. I always thought he was a very impressive player, [but] they just didn't throw the ball very
much. So when we got into the draft, I called on my son to help me do a little recruiting. He did a good job.”
