It encourages a moment to moment capacity to listen/observe and respond with an emphasis on staying firmly rooted in the present. PARTICIPANTS: £75 5 July - September 2014 Programme The Pleasure to Make Believe Amy Gwilliam July 5 10.30-17.30 Course: A3 Keywords: PLAY | IMPROVISATION | GAMES | EXPLORE | ENERGY Suspecting there may be a lingering tradition in British theatre in training actors to take themselves too seriously, severing and censoring themselves from their own pleasure, this workshop invites performers to dishevel, revel and reveal themselves through the anarchic and deeply beautiful world of Play. If we get back to basics seeking what drives any performer – be they tragic, comic, clown, soap, politic – we find a common ground, an inner child with a deep pleasure to convince, pretend, or even lie, charged with the secret knowledge that it’s Make Believe. Daniel Hoffmann-Gill July 9 OR August 21 10.30-13.30 Course: A5 Keywords: POSITIVITY | IMPRO GAMES | CREATIVITY | SELF-BELIEF | POTENTIAL If this sentence fills you with dread, or a desire to sit back and wait to see what happens first, then this workshop is for you. A large majority of actors never reach their full potential as performers because they have not only forgotten how to play and be playful but more fundamentally, they have little faith or belief in what they say and do; always second guessing themselves and judging their creative output far too harshly. Crippling fears of failure lead to anxiety and anxiety destroys creativity. Using positive thinking and NLP techniques, mixed with classic acting, improvisation exercises and a few new things thrown in for fun, Daniel will teach you practical methods to not only unlock your latent imagination and creativity but get you feeling more positively about yourself, both as a performer and a human being. WARNING: this session will contain lots of failure and a full ban on trying your best. → Daniel trained at the Central School of Speech & Drama and for the past 17 years has worked extensively as an actor in theatre, TV and film. PARTICIPANTS: £18 7 July - September 2014 Programme Voice in Challenging Venues William Trotter July 9, 10 14.00-17.00 Course: VC1 Keywords: PROJECTION | DIFFICULT VENUES | VOCAL TECHNIQUES | VOCAL HEALTH | FLEXIBILITY Site-specific, community, stand-up – increasingly performers are working venues that are neither theatres nor studios, but which make challenging and unpredictable demands on the voice: over-heated, dry atmospheres, sometimes restless audiences, open air, high stress levels. Not everyone has the basic voice skills that could reduce the risk of a strained throat, but the more flexible your voice is, the more you can turn your lines to get the reaction you want, whatever the environment. The first session will introduce you to some simple exercises that you can use to lubricate your voice so that it doesn't tire and also make your voice more flexible, varied and focused. In the second session we will apply what you’ve learnt to any text you want to bring in, focussing on how vocal delivery can help you use the lines with more impact. PARTICIPANTS: £60 32 July - September 2014 Programme Writing and Performing Solo Claire Dowie September 17 10.30-17.30 Course: WR4 Keywords: SOLO SHOWS | WRITER/PERFORMER | PRACTICAL | STORYTELLING | CHARACTER Claire Dowie will illustrate her unique approach to writing and performing acclaimed, award-winning solo theatre shows. Learn useful techniques for the creation and development of character and narrative and enhance your writing and performing skills. The workshop will explore the difference between acting and performing in three steps: the creation or memory of characters and events, retelling the story of those events from the character’s viewpoint and recreating reality in the imaginations of the audience. We will create characters from a range of stimuli – whether they are real or imaginary, based on ourselves or other people, the process is the same. We will uncover our character’s stories allowing them to emerge organically without manipulation and focus on the narrative, finding the perspective(s) from which to tell our stories. At the end of the day there will be an opportunity to show the work created and receive detailed comments and suggestions for further development. → Claire Dowie is an award-winning writer, performer and comedian whose work is studied and performed all over the world both in English and in translation. Twelve stage plays including Adult Child Dead Child and Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt? have been published by Methuen in three collections alongside her first novel, Creating Chaos, which has also been published in German and Italian.
