visceral theatrical experiences that challenge the perspective of audience and artist alike,
through passionate storytelling. The theater is inspired by the diversity of our city and is
committed to making the theater accessible to all audiences. Through initiatives such as
our Protégé Progam, we create a space which allows emerging artists to grow and share
in the ensemble experience.

FROM THE PL AY WRIGHT
Scott McPherson wrote this note for the program when Marvin’s Room
opened at Hartford Stage Company 25 years ago.
My grandmother was the first “dying” person I ever knew. I already
knew a dead person. My father. Dad, who was once a race car driver
and then a married Volkswagen salesman with three baby boys, drove
the babysitter home and on his way back to us wrapped his car around
a telephone pole, killing himself and disrupting phone conversations
on the east side of Columbus for a good couple of hours. But I never thought of my father
as a “dying” person. He was alive - and then simply dead.
It was my grandmother who was “dying,” her cancer-ridden body resting in the upstairs
bedroom where the only TV in the house stood at the foot of her bed. If you wanted
to watch Ed Sullivan, and I did, you also had to watch grandmother, commercials and
morphine injections coming at regular intervals. It was a situation that, to a child, seemed
neither odd nor morbid.
My mother was to be grandmother’s chief caregiver, raise three children, keep house
and work part time as a sales clerk at Lazarus department store. My mother, who studied
modern dance in college and married a race car driver against her parents’ wishes, threw
herself at her responsibilities with a terrifying determination - afraid if she gave any less she
would awaken to find she was running off in the other direction, leaving all of us behind to
fend for ourselves.
Now I am 31 and my lover has AIDS. Our friends have AIDS. And we all take care of each
other, the less sick caring for the more sick. At times, an unbelieveably harsh fate is
transcended by a simple act of love, by caring for another.
By most, we are thought of as “dying.” But as dying becomes a way of life, the meaning of
word blurs.
—Scott McPerson (November, 1990)

ANIMALS OUT OF PAPER
By Rajiv Joseph
Directed by Devon de Mayo
In Rajiv Joseph’s ANIMALS OUT OF PAPER, Andy, a calculus teacher and avid fan,
pressures a reclusive Ilana, a world famous origami artist, into becoming an unwitting
mentor to a troubled teenage prodigy, Suresh. These three intriguingly flawed characters
begin to reshape and mold each other’s lives in much the same way they fold and crease
their origami art. During a production at New York’s Second Stage Theater, The New York
Times wrote, “Mr. Joseph’s observant, pitch-perfect script seems modest at first but is
really quite ambitious, dealing ruthlessly…with the fragility of happiness, the tragedy of
impulsiveness and the tenuousness of hope.”

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
Based on the novel by John Ball
Adapted by Matt Pelfrey, directed by Louis Contey
IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT recounts the classic, highly charged story of an African
American police officer asked to investigate a murder in a racially hostile southern town.
It’s a torrid night in 1965 Argo, Alabama, when a dead white man is found. The local
police, desperately searching for a motive and a suspect, arrest a black man passing
through town. The police soon discover that their suspect is an expert homicide
detective from LA and they must confront their personal prejudices as they are forced
to work side by side to solve the crime. The award winning film version starring Sidney
Poitier remains emblematic of our country in the 1960s. Fifty years later, Pelfry’s new
adaptation of the novel leaves room for the evolution of these attitudes. But watching
the nightly news – how far have we come?

professional theater community. The program is free to participants in order to
provide equal access and opportunity to talented young artists. Originally created by
Roger Smart, the program has been run by Kate LoConti and now, in her third year,
