Ex Australia Post Archives. Although the ACSC characterises this item as an "essay", it is more correctly an unissued stamp. 27,000,000 booklet stamps had been printed when the decision was made to raise the basic postage rate to 4d. The Post Office destroyed all but a few sheets. At the two Archival Sales conducted in 1986 & 1987, a total of 40 stamps were sold, comprising 4 singles - one sold for $12,075 at the Prestige auction of 22/4/2006 - 4 booklet panes of 6, and a plate number block of 12 - sold for $109,250 at the Prestige auction of 25/5/2008. We expect that most of the "panes" of 6 have been reduced to singles. 20,000 Prestige Philately - General Public Auction 200 Mar 05, 2015 Lot Page:3 Type Grading Description Est $A 1959-65 DEFINITIVES 633 ? A/A- Ex Lot 633 1959-63 Animals 6d to 1/2d watercolours by Eileen Mayo on thin card (150x185mm or slightly larger) being copies by her of the designs as approved for the six Animal stamps, each signed "Eileen Mayo", a few minor blemishes still a very attractive display. [Eileen Mayo produced ten copies of the artwork for the 6d 8d & 9d but only five each of the 10d 11d & 1/2d. The 10d Platypus was issued as the 1/- in the series. The necessary changes made to that design prompted her to publicly rebuke the Post Office for amending and degrading her artwork. With a couple of background articles] (6) 500T
