EASTBOURNE AND SOUTH DOWNS PHILATELIC SOCIETY AUCTION
29th October 2015
We have been over-subscribed this time, so the number of lots that have made it into the catalogue have been
limited to the cut-off figure of 340 lots, which is the most that we seem able to handle in one evening comfortably.
On the back page you will find details of the January auction which is to start half an hour earlier at 7 pm. The plan
is to get through somewhere between 400 – 450 lots to allow us to catch up with the excess this time, and to cope
with the likely flurry that we will get for that particular auction.
The auction is bulkier than the last, but hopefully that won’t mean a diminution of quality. Thanks again to those of
the Vendors who listed their lots in the catalogue order, added stickers etc. That is always a real saving when there
isn’t much time available, and that very much applies this time I’ve been in Gateshead this week.
As usual, if you cannot get to the auction, we can bid on your behalf, but if possible, bids should be made at least
24 hours before the start of the auction. If possible, please place bids on a book bid form, but if that’s not possible,
please give me a ring or send an e-mail. My e-mail address is on the last page of the catalogue.
Also as usual, (and as mentioned above), descriptions are primarily those supplied by the Vendors (except where
the auctioneers have expanded them in the interests of clarity or to point out faults which they have found but which
were not mentioned by the Vendors).
Please remember that, unless otherwise shown, all prices shown in the last column are reserves, the lowest price
at which the lot will be sold.
Bidding steps:These are at the discretion of the auctioneer, but the normal steps will be:Up to £2 – in steps of 10p
£2 to £5 – in steps of 20p
£5 to £10 – in steps of 50p
£11 to £50 – in steps of £1
£50 to £100 – in steps of £2
£100 upwards – in steps of £5 or at the auctioneers discretion

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ End of Room Auction~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If members are unable to attend the auction, they may forward book bids to the auctioneer. Please complete the
Book Bid form available on the viewing night. Please ensure that your bids are received at least 24 hours before
the auction to be certain that they are entered.
Payments may be made in cash (right money appreciated) or by cheque to made payable to Eastbourne and
South Downs P. S. or if you’d prefer just to E.& SDPS
The club generally holds 7 auctions a year, so we are always in need of material for sale. Guidance in putting
together lots appears in the Society’s handbook. Would all Vendors please check this. In particular, Vendors
are reminded:a) of the necessity to use the proper forms (or something very similar to it) when submitting lots.
b) to try and give a genuine and accurate description of the lot – including details of flaws, rusting, corners missing,
lack of gum on a mint stamp etc.
c) to ensure that each lot submitted has a panel or cover which would allow a lot number to be affixed
without damaging the lot, and
d) to submit lots which are not overflowing (boxes), likely to shed material (loose in albums) etc, etc.
e) that there is a 50p minimum and that lots of less than £1 may not make the cut but could be held over to a
subsequent auction
f) that packet-type material should not be sealed so as to deny inspection.
If you require further advice, please speak to one of the auction organisers/helpers
Additional notes.
a)
Auction material can still be handed to one of the auction organizers at Thursday meetings. The existing
form can be used (although see (b) below). Material needs to be handed to Bill France, Richard Robbins or
Tim Griffiths, one of whom will, baring disaster, be present at the usual 7.15-7.30 time.
b)
For those that would prefer to type their lists for sale rather than handwrite them, this will be actively
encouraged. Tim can send you an e-mailable form that will be in the same layout as the auction catalogue.
This will save him having to type it too! The list, when returned, needs to be sent to
tgriffiths@mayowynnebaxter.co.uk . The material can be handed over in the normal way.
c)
Material can also by arrangement be handed to one of the organizers elsewhere on request.
d)
Packet-type material should not be sealed so as to deny inspection, please.
See over for details of the changes for the January auction
Next Auction: 14th January 2016
This will start at 7 pm, not 7.30pm.
It seems likely that the number of lots submitted for the next auction will be greater than usual. This is
because:a)
b)
c)
d)
There is a longer period between this auction and the next than the norm
A number of lots have been held over from this auction
We know that at least 10 large boxes of the somewhat unsorted ex- T & T basement material have
ended up with our regular contributing Vendors, and
I rather suspect that they would rather that some of it was sitting on my floor for Christmas rather
than theirs…………
The January auction last year saw the highest number of lots submitted that I have received in the last 10
auctions, and we attempted to deal with the rush by way of a book bid arrangement. Those 100 bookbid
lots actually created more work than the main 300 lots, one way or another, and both Richard and I are
keen to try and avoid a repetition of that if possible. This is (I think) a practical alternative, and we might
as well give it a go.
Here’s how it should work:1.
The viewing day timings will not be affected, save that there will probably be more to look at!
2.
The viewing on auction day will be brought forward by (hopefully) about 15-30 minutes. That does
depend to some extent on circumstances at the time, but it ought to work
3.
The order of the auction will change so that the “F” lots (which in the case of January will
probably be “lots of £1 or less”) will go first at 7 pm. That way, anybody that is late should not
miss anything too exciting. If you are unable to make it on auction night before 7.30, then you will
be able to leave book bids in advance. It would be helpful to know, in those circumstances, if you
hope to turn up later on. The plan is to give Nigel (and anyone else that has trouble with the
earlier timing) a bidding number for his book-bid lots so that he can pick up the card with the same
number later on and add to the cheap lots that he might have acquired in the first 30 minutes or so.
4.
The rest of the auction will take place in the usual order starting with the usual box lots. That will
not start before 7.30,
