Redesign of the Rules Engine
Added locations in the data flow to apply rules
This excerpt from
the previous
slide more
clearly shows the
numerous
locations in the
data flow of a
result message
that rules can be
applied using the
8.12 rules engine

Redesign of the Rules Engine
Three Available Rules Processing Modes
• 1) Live (Legacy)
When a system is upgraded from a earlier version of Instrument
Manager, the Live rule set is not converted to the 8.12 format
The Live rule set will function exactly as it did prior to the upgrade,
using the old rules engine
No rules in this set can be changed in any way, Legacy mode is
applicable only to the Live rules set of an upgraded system
Can be left in place while validating the converted
Test/In Validation rules set

Three Available Rules Processing Modes
• 2) Compatibility/Yes
 Rules use the new syntax while still processing Parent / Child rules
as did earlier versions
– Conversion to the new syntax occurs automatically as part of the upgrade process
 Provides increased speed of execution
 “Else” statements are not enabled
 This is the default setting for the Test/In Validation rule sets when
upgrading from an earlier version of Instrument Manager

Three Available Rules Processing Modes
• 3) Compatibility/No
Rules use the new syntax and rules engine processing schema
Provides greatly increased speed of execution, especially when
evaluating Parent/Child rules
“Else” statements are enabled
This is the default mode for new configurations after upgrading
from an earlier version

• Compatibility Mode Selection
Mode can be switched from Yes to No while in Test/In Validation
Rules Testing uses the selected mode when executing test
scenarios

More Flexible Syntax
• Previous versions’ syntax was based on “phrases”
 This limited the rules capability to those phrases that were predefined
in the data elements or actions
– only a limited number of data elements could have a value set by rules
» e.g. {Set Test Result of}
• 8.12 syntax separates many of these phrases into their
component parts, increasing the potential combinations of
actions and data elements
 Users can apply actions to data elements in combinations not
previously available
– e.g. {Set} {Result} {On Test}
 The Upgrade Reference Guide includes “Legacy – 8.12 dictionary”

Enhanced Toolbox Categorization
• Data Elements have been
classified into four categories
to facilitate their use when
creating rules
 The Rules Manual contains an
alphabetical listing of each Data
Element and its respective
Toolbox category

“Else” as an available statement type
• For rules sets using version 8.12’s native processing
mode the traditional
“If…..” – “Then…..” structure
is expanded to an
“If…..” – “Then…..” – “Else…..” structure
When coupled with the more flexible 8.12 syntax the addition of
Else provides an extremely powerful rules capability

Audit Trail Event Monitoring
• New Rule Property
Can be switched from Yes to No while in Test/In Validation
Useful to restrict audit trail event logging to only those events
affecting patient data

New data presentation format
– includes the new Run Worksheet pane, along with the Specimen Worksheet
pane, and the Patient Information pane
• Hematology Workspace
Enhances hematology workflow
– includes the new Run Worksheet pane, along with the Specimen Worksheet
pane, the Specimen Information pane
– both the Cell Counter and Images panes tabbed for easy access.

• Run Worksheet
Multiple instances of a
specimen analysis are
shown in columns rather
than rows
– Visual comparison of
results from different runs
is easily done
