Josenians danced animation songs during the overnight vigil. T his year’s Youth for Jo doubled its participants compared to last year’s. There were a total of 3, 369 Josenians from both the college and high school departments who attended the celebration compared to last year’s more or less 1, 500 participants. Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) enrollees and higher year level students dominated the attendees who gathered in the USJ-R main campus quadrangle last September 4 and 5. Reaching Out Society (ROS) Vice President (Internal) Cherie Pepito said this year’s Youth for Jo was livelier than last year because of the bigger population. She added that due to the increase in student population, there were more Campus Ministry volunteers present. Headed by its new Director Reverend Fr. Randolph P. Castillo Jr., OAR, the Campus Ministry Office enlisted 450 volunteers to facilitate the event. Most of them were from Liturgical Yodelers Recoletos (LYRE), Reaching Out Society, Recollect Augustinian Youth (RAY), Catholic Charismatic Youth Ministry (CCYM), Lector’s Guild (LG), and Confraternity of Augustinian Recollect Altar Servers (CARAS). This year’s Youth for Jo theme is “Si Kristo mismo, Siya ang totoo.” USJR’s president Reverend Fr. Enrico Peter A. Silab, OAR said during his speech that all the activities must center to Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life. Pepito further said that many students joined because of the new activities offered such as the Wonder Girls Jingle Contest and the Body Band Contest. The Wonder Girls Jingle Contest was based on a Korean pop group’s song “Nobody”. Each student organization in the university presented its own version of the song. The groups must compose their own lyrics to the tune of “Nobody” but still related to the theme. “It is a way for us to realize unsa’y gifts nga gihatag sa Ginoo nga magamit nato,” said Jemma Operiano, a Catholic Charismatic Youth Ministry volunteer. The participants of the Body Band Contest, also from the different student organizations, produced sound effects using the different parts of their bodies such as beat boxing with their mouths, stomping their feet, or snapping their fingers. Some products were made by Josenian students enrolled in Filipino subjects. “We want to remind the students that they should be nationalistic at least through patronizing the Filipino delicacies and products,” said Mrs. Percia Leyte, Chairperson of the Department of Communication, Languages, and Literature who attended the opening ceremony. A presentation of the Filipino culture was also presented and was witnessed by Vice President for Academics and Director of External Affairs Reverend Fr. Edwin Macmac, OAR and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Teoddie Dumam-ag. “We just want the Filipino culture to be highlighted,” said Buklod Wika President, Enrique Felisario. “The theme is trying to emphasize the identity of the Filipino.” The closing ceremonies culminated last September 1 at the Center for Performing Arts (CfPA). During the ceremony, both third year MassCom students Alley Tulabing and Omar Sahibbil acted a dialogue depicting the importance of Filipino Language. Some Josenians also presented songs and dances based on the different timelines of Philippine music and entertainment. The event was organized by Buklod Wika, the official Filipino organization of the school, and Filipino advisers. by Riza M. Letrago Supreme Student Council (SSC) 28th Congress launched the SSC Talents Network (STN) last August 10. Organized for the first time, STN serves as the mother organization among the talents guild of the organizations in the university. SSC 28th Congress Vice-President Jynx King Chanjueco, CAS HR Alvin Ybañez, CAS HR Evina Michaela Lupango, and College of Engineering HR Ruby Amethyst Ceniza were appointed to facilitate STN. The facilitators together with STN’s core group will tap the different student organizations to gather Josenian singers and dancers. SSC President Bryan Pulgade said that his Congress came up with STN to have a better linkage with other student organizations. STN’s core group is composed of Girem Alberio, Mariz Atillo, Vergel Boyles, Melchor Bunado, Liezel Ann Llanos, James McJel Lota, Ace Angeli Ortega, Shiela Reyes, Joceybel Tan, and Kimberly Ycong. On December 4, STN’s members will showcase their first stage performance to be dubbed as “Center Stage: A night of Josenian Talents” at the Center for Performing Arts. Moreover, Pulgade said STN is in lieu with the annual Students’ Night which won’t be realized this year. “Though there is a budget, but we (SSC officers) see the waste of Php40000 which will only benefit a thousand of students.” Aside from the financial and audience’s considerations, Pulgade added that they see the possible malpractices of students during Students’ Night. “Ang uban morason nga mogawas kay kwaon sa parents nya uyab diay.” Besides, Pulgade added that there was a voting done by all the SSC officers to decide whether or not Students’ Night will push through. Majority of the officers favored not to have the event. 25 Jos win 1 VS 100 by Faith Clovell T. I was just there for fun, but fortunately nakadaog ko,” Ahdzleebee L. Formentera, a BSIT-1 student expressed. The Supreme Student Council 28th Congress Vice President Jynx King R. Chanjueco was the single player who tried to beat the mob. REGISTER FOR CHANGE. The Josenians are now making a small step towards their big challenge in the 2010 elections. In preparation for the 2010 presidential poll, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) conducted two offsite registrations at the USJ-R main lobby. The off-site registrations only catered to South and North districts registrants. A total of 83 Josenians and 236 outsiders from the North district registered on July 8 while 384 Josenians and 71 outsiders from the South registered on July 31. The Supreme Student Council (SSC) 28th Congress took the initiative of inviting COMELEC in the university. The COMELEC in coordination with the SSC also accommodated outsiders who are not from the two districts. SSC House Representative, Rex Donald Vadal, voiced out the registration of Josenians in the university is just one form of making a change in the country. “There are around 11 million youth all over the country today, and this offsite registration is just a way to exercise or to practice the rights and responsibilities of the Josenians in nation-building.” Before the registration took place in the university, a survey, as required by the COMELEC, was conducted first in order to test if the university can attain the required minimum number of registrants. The COMELEC needs to have more or less five hundred registrants before it can hold the off-site registration. The SSC officers conducted the survey last May 19 among students. For the South district alone, SSC listed 338 Josenians who wanted to register, 54 were from Basak. This made the school qualified to hold offsite registrations. COMELEC also held forums and voter’s education seminar. During the actual registration, ABSCBN and GMA reporters came to the university to cover the event. Vadal concluded that the offsite registration was successful “kay di gubot og daghan ang ni-participate.” CICCT hosts another programming competition by Jennifer L. The game flowed smoothly until the third question not until when the fourth question which divided the players into two. At this time, Chanjueco had to use one of his lifelines to call for a friend. However, Chanjueco gave the wrong answer. The game show, hosted by Carl Dave Ang, was one way for the SSC to reach out to the students in Basak Campus. The 1 VS 100 Josenians was based on the hit TV game show, 1 VS 100. The event was one of the activities in stored for the SSC Organizational Week. competition. The qualifiers were formed into seven teams in which each team was given six problems to solve. The ALLEF scholars made a spoof performance out from a famous Broadway play – Chorus Line. The University of San Jose-Recoletos Dramatics and Cultural Ensemble Amparito Llamas-Lhuillier Educational Foundation (USJ-R DCE-ALLEF) staged a ‘spoof’ on characters and ‘caricatures’ called the Chorusline. In collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) talents, the presentation was held at the main Audio Visual Room on September 2 and 3. According to ALLEF Adviser and play director Dr. Milagros S. Espina, the play was intended for the development of confidence and improvement of articulation and pronunciation skills of the actors. She added that it is also necessary for the students, as audience, to learn how to draw comments out of the presentation. “I feel very fulfilled,” Dr. Espina said. She was a CAS dean for over 27 years and is now a professor of the graduate school in this university. One of the actors and an ABMC – 3 student, Nico Ivan Velasquez, said he learned a lot on the presentation. “After more than two months of rehearsals, everything really paid off.” Another actor and an ABMC - 3 student, Rachel Puray, also said that she learned values such as time management and being focused. An amateur in the group, Lanielyn Cabardo, also expressed her feelings in being part of the ALLEF group for over one year. “Wala ko nagtuo na maabot ko diri kay grabe kaayo ko kahadlok atong pag-audition,” she said. ALLEF Chairman, Ms. Amparito L. Lhuiller, was one of the audience and was impressed by the students’ performance. “It was really well-acted and I see good stars,” she commented. There are only 17 ALLEF scholars in the university this year, a lesser number of what is the expected number of scholars. “Usually, we have 25 scholars,” she said. Ms. Lhuiller added that ALLEF only grants scholarships to talented third and fourth year students. She even mentioned that despite the busy practice and performance schedules, academics is still ALLEF’s top priority. EDITORIAL BOARD AND STAFF Jefferson M.
