1994 Alusaf Hillside Smelter
Construction of the Alusaf Hillside smelter begins. Although aimed at the
export market with estimated net foreign exchange earnings of R2.3 billion per
annum, important downstream opportunities will be created by the increased
availability of low cost ingots locally. Tongaat-Hulett is to investigate the
feasibility of expanding the aluminium rolling facility at an estimated cost of
R1.4 billion, representing a major downstream beneficiation step.
