Chapter Sponsorship 11 “Moving Forward Together” P age |2 President’s Message Dear Members, WOW! What a busy last few months it has been. I am sure many of you are in the mind set of spending time with family and friends over the Christmas Holiday. As a chapter we have a lot to be proud of. During the last three month’s we have seen a tremendous turnout for our luncheons covering topics in the areas of Data Analytics, Construction Audit and Enterprise Risk Management. We have held successful courses on Risk Assurance, Internal Audit skills and Report writing, including hosting our first IIA Canada learning week. Our social held in early November was a success and provided our member the opportunity to mix mingle and reconnect. We have a very active and vibrant chapter, not just working hard but willing to play hard. I think the topic which seems to be resonating most with our membership at this point in time appears to be in the area of Data Analytics’, Construction Audit and Enterprise Risk Management. Given the uncertainty and volatility we have experienced in the economy and stock markets management is taking a much more proactive approach at understanding what their key risks are and how well they are mitigated and they are looking to internal audit for assistance. The boom in the Oil Sands has focused management and the board on getting assurance over their organizations large capital projects. This has presented increased strain on the internal audit function who is looking at the use of analytics’ to extend their coverage and complete their work more efficiently. Looking into 2013 we have some fantastic luncheons lined up, and will have more social networking. Our board is looking forward to serving you next year. As always if you have interest in becoming a part of our board please feel free to reach out to me or one of the governors. Merry Christmas and Happy New Years! Cheers! Anthony Jankowski P age |3 Our Sponsors Chapter Volunteer Opportunities! The Calgary Chapter has a few volunteer opportunities, to which we invite any and all members. As a senior manager he was involved in hundreds of events and serious incidents and has advised foreign governments on specific security related issues, this has equipped him to bring considerable experience to the private sector. Academic Corner – EPAP Course (ERCB Directive 076) Note to members: The ERCB’s Enhanced Production Audit Program (EPAP) introduces IIA standards and a risk and controls-based approach (Audit best practice) to regulatory compliance in the province of Alberta. This is a unique opportunity for IA to demonstrate value, and assist others in the organization with any, or all, of the following: 1. Identifying controls related to production measurement and reporting. 2. Testing controls 3. Assisting with reporting of data to the ERCB (note, EPAP requires a SOX-like Declaration to be submitted to the ERCB each year, as to the state of controls over upstream measurement and reporting). Last Fall, the IIA Calgary Chapter offered a course introducing EPAP. Please stay tuned for a follow-up EPAP course in the first half of 2013, which will focus on the following topics: Sustaining your EPAP program Implementing and executing the EPAP controls remediation plan P age |6 Approaching compliance differently, and better, in EPAP Year 2 Addressing EPAP Compliance Assessment Indicators Working with the EPAP System Working with the ERCB Production Audit Team The course will be delivered by Ali Hasnain, former Team Lead of Production Audit at the ERCB. The Chapter will keep you posted on details as they become available. Request to members: If you work in oil and gas, please make your internal production measurement and/or reporting (accounting) staff aware about this course. EPAP directly impacts such staff, and they will stand a lot to gain from a course such as this. The chapter is the sum of its members, so in effect we need ‘us’ to help ‘us’. The Calgary chapter exists to serve its members and promote the internal audit profession. Along with individual members, the IIA community includes many companies. Often companies see value in aligning with their local chapter. Companies that partner with their local chapter will be able to publicize their commitment to the internal audit profession while actively supporting IIA members; both within their company and their community. As part of the Calgary chapter’s commitment to promote the profession, the chapter Board is launching a new and revised sponsorship initiative. As board members, we are excited to take on the responsibilities associated with coordinating sponsorship activities; however, to truly improve the probability of success we need some help with the heavy lifting necessary to promote this new initiative. To help with the re-launch we need your support to raise awareness within your companies. Your support may be realized through active initiative promotion within your company, passing this email on to your CAE, and/or countless efforts in between. Your support in this launch is greatly appreciated.
