Principal’s Pen
By Jill Long
It is hard to believe that there is only 8 weeks or 39 days of school left.
Summer will be here before we know it. Mrs. Peddle, Mrs.
Hoppenreys and I attended the Leader In Me Symposium this week in
Edmonton. We had a great time together meeting many new people,
visiting other Leader In Me schools in Alberta, and heard some
amazing guest speakers. I must say I am so proud of our school and
how far we have come in such a relatively short time.
Tell Them From Me Survey
Thank you to all the parents who completed the survey. For the third
year in a row, Loreburn Central School had 84% of our parents complete
the survey. This means that our school will receive an ipad. If parents
completed the survey at the school, their name was entered to win
school clothing. Congratulations to Hayoung Ryu and Austin Daniluk on
winning school clothing.

Student Leadership Conference
Nayoung Ryu and Brooklyn Lemcke had the opportunity to travel to
Marengo to attend the Westcliffe SLC this past weekend. This was the
8th Annual Student Leadership Conference put on by the Student
Leadership Team of Sun West Students, and they did a great job!
There were two speakers: Heather Shultz
(http://www.heatherschultz.net) and John Beede
(http://everestmotivationalspeaker.com/) gave great talks and
sessions on Student Leadership and taking ownership of their own
lives.
Leadership is NOT A TITLE! Choose a summit, gear up and climb!
The students attending had a dance on Friday Night and were able to
choose three Breakout Sessions on Saturday. Students were able to
learn about Digital Citizenship, Leadership Opportunities at school,
etc.
Thanks to the Loreburn SCC for sponsoring our students and
supporting The Leader In Me program at the school by paying for
these kids to go and participate in Leadership Activities.
Thanks to the Students and staff of Westcliffe Composite School for
their hospitality.
Thanks to @teamsunwest for their work and enthusiasm in planning
and running the weekend! If you have a student interested in joining
this team next year, they should! What a great group of students!

Elementary Awards
Several months ago, the staff at LCS received a proposal written by
Reece Tastad in grade five. This proposal suggested starting giving out
awards to students in grades K-6. The reason behind this was, "to
recognize the elementary students for what they do because when
you are recognized it brings a smile to your face."
The staff was impressed with Reece's well thought out plan and
decided to support her with this. Mrs. Adams and Reece have been
working together and on April 14th, Reece presented her plan to the
elementary students and gave out her first set of awards, best
attendance in each class. The award winners were:
K- Vincent Yakimoski
Grade 1 - Florianne Pacheco
Grade 2 - Annika Wonnick
Grade 3 – Macy Norrish
Grade 4 – Jordyn Dorward
Grade 5 – Rachel Stamnes
Grade 6 – Emmitt Hundeby (Who would like to thank his mother for
this honor)
Yesterday Reece and Mrs. Adams selected winners based on student
nominations and the winners were:
Rebecca Possberg-Helping Hand
Jasmine Hundeby-High Achiever
Ethan Possberg-Helping Hand
Rachel Stamnes- Oh, So Sweet
Emmitt Hundeby-Helping Hand
Reece Tastad- Oh, So Sweet
More awards happening all the time!
K-1-2 Classroom
We want to say farewell to Florianne Pacheco,
our fun and enthusiastic friend. We wish her
well in Edmonton and with the world as her
playground.
Outdoor Classroom Update
Construction began on our outdoor classroom on May 17th. The gravel
and topsoil were hauled in. The first of the flower beds was prepared.
The floor of the structure was tamped and the posts were mapped out
ready for the concrete foundations. Everything was running smoothly
and we were preparing for construction on May 1st and 2nd. As the first
hole was dug for the support posts, we came across a small glitch in our
plan. Our volunteer helpers came across diesel in the soil. As a result,
our division office and an environmental company is dealing with the
situation and we hope to continue the project soon.

Family Reading Literacy
Thank you to the SCC for providing us with books for families to read
together. The students then answered questions and had to have the
questions correct to win some fun prizes. Our school goal states that by
June of 2015 all students will be reading at grade level or will have
increased one level in their reading skills. The family reading program is
another way to encourage students and their families to share their love
of reading.
“I think the family reading program is good because I can choose when
to read. My favorite part in Mr. Popper’s Penguins was when Mr.
Popper was getting the penguin, Captain Cook.” Casey Haugen
“Shiloh was very good. It made me happy and sad. I love when my dad
reads the book to us, he has great voices for all the characters.” Alexius
Long
“My favorite part was when the Penguins went on the train.”
Conner Griffin
“I like the part in Shiloh when he found the dog.” Gregory O’Brien
“I liked that there was different levels for each family to read. I chose
the book Acceleration.” Abby Adams
Winners were as follows:
April 14 – Macy Norrish
April 16 – Brooklyn Lemcke
April 17 – Jordyn Dorward
April 20 – Abigail Graham
April 23 – Ethan Possberg
April 24 – Bobbi Jo Snustead
April 27 – Dillan Graham
April 28 – Alexius Long
