Physics 1020 - Winter 2008 - Course Syllabus Course: Physics 1020 - Introductory Physics I Location: C-2045 (class), C-2038 (lab) Section: 02, Slot: 08 Lab Slot: M 9-11 Website: www.physics.mun.ca/~wkavanag/phys1020/ Instructor: Bill Kavanagh Office: C-2055 Phone: 737-7943 E-mail: wkavanag@physics.mun.ca Website: www.physics.mun.ca/~wkavanag Textbook: Physics by James S. Walker, 3rd Edition (A must! 2nd hand books available. I can advise if other books are ok.) Assignments: There will be two components to your assignments. CAPA - You will have to complete a number of assignments (roughly 8) throughout the semester and they will be online and in the format of CAPA. You are responsible to find out about the CAPA assignments a.s.a.p.; in particular how to find your CAPA IDs, how to log in and how to complete the assignments. The first CAPA will be available near the end of the first week. You can find out all you need to know by going the MUN Physics homepage at www.mun.ca/physics and click on the CAPA link on the Related Content menu to the right. Hand Written Questions - You will be required to complete and submit a hand written solution to one question from your CAPA assignments for roughly half of your assignments. Laboratories: You are required to attend all laboratories. Laboratory Information - All the lab information you need like laboratory schedule and laboratory manual with regulations can be found at the MUN Physics homepage at www.mun.ca/physics and following the links on the left hand menu to Undergraduate, Undergraduate Laboratories. Laboratory Materials - You do not require a hard copy of the Laboratory Manual. However you will require duotang folder (paper folders with 3 metal pieces to hold three hole sheets of paper) to submit Laboratory Worksheets. Prelab Questions - You must complete prelab questions on D2L before the beginning of your registered lab slot. Tutorial/CAPA Sessions - On weeks where you do not have an Experiment, there will be lab session where part of the time will be used to deliver a tutorial the remaining time will be used as a help CAPA assignment help session . You are required to attend these and attendance will be taken. Grading Scheme: Course Component Quantity Weight Notes 10% Includes the Hand Written questions described above. Mark will be roughly the same as a CAPA assignment i.e. ~1%. Laboratory Reports 6 10% Includes Prelab questions as described above. Term Test 2 30% Final Exam 1 50% Total 16-17 100% Assignments (CAPA) 8-9 Important Notes: 1. A mark of 50% is required in the Laboratory Component of the course in order to pass the course. 2. Students repeating the course may carry over their previous laboratory mark BUT they must make arrangements with me at the beginning of the course to do so. 3. Medical Notes are required in many instances like being absent from course components. It is your responsibility to obtain a medical note that is sufficiently specific to allow proper consideration to the students case. Please see the section of the University Calendar, 4.14.4 Information Required for Medical Certificates! 4. Supplementary Exams are available as per the conditions stated in the University Calendar. You should ask for help there once you have put in the work and you need some further direction or help with an understanding of a concept, with an assignment question, or with lab preparation. Expectations/Advice: Instructor - To facilitate learning. Have general concern for the student's outcome in course. Student - Learn by reading, making notes, and practicing problems and NOT by "being taught". Advice: You should go over material before and/or after class. Understand material before starting an assignment question. The purpose of CAPA assignments is NOT to submit the correct response; it IS to understand the associated material and to problem solve.
