HOW TO LOCATE LIBRARY MATERIAL

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION
Non-fiction material in the college library collection is classified and
organized by the Library of Congress classification system. A subject area
is assigned to each book and corresponding alphanumeric characters,
known as call numbers, are placed on the book’s spine. The call number
appears on the listing for each item in IvyCat, the online college library
catalog, and TIPCAT, the online public library catalog. The number
describes where the material is placed on the shelves.
This is an example of a Library of Congress call number:

All of the Public Library’s circulating nonfiction materials are located in the
north and northwest sections of the second floor. All of the public library
reference materials are merged with the college reference in the center area
of the second floor and classified according to the Library of Congress
classification system.
ONLINE CATALOGS - IVYCAT AND TIPCAT
Public library non-fiction material is classified and organized on the shelf by
the Dewey Decimal classification system. A subject area is assigned to each
book and the corresponding numeric characters [call number] are placed on
the book’s spine. This call number appears on the listing of each item in
TIPCAT, the online public library catalog, and describes for the library
IvyCat, the Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana online
catalog, contains all the holdings of Ivy Tech libraries statewide, including
books, videos/DVDs, magazines and electronic books. TIPCAT, the
Tippecanoe County Public Library online catalog contains the holdings of
the entire county system plus the Ivy Tech collection at the Campus
Library. Electronic books are not available on
TIPCAT.
