LIBRARY INSTRUCTION
The ability to effectively find, evaluate, and use information is a skill that will serve both you
and your students throughout your lifetime. The library offers orientations to familiarize our
patrons with the research process, including tours of the available resources and how to use
them efficiently. Whether seeking information for academic or personal reasons, library staff
is dedicated to connecting you with the best resources available.
What is a Library Orientation?
Library orientations may include:
Physical tours
Come to the library to become familiar with the locations of book
collections, video viewing carrels, periodicals, puppets, computers, and
more.
Virtual tours
Library staff will come to your classroom to demonstrate how to find
online materials quickly and efficiently. Common instruction topics
include using the library catalog, navigating article databases, and touring
the Virtual Library.
Critical thinking
Learn how to refine your search strategy to get the most accurate results
and examine your sources to choose the best one for the situation.
Library instruction may be scheduled for individuals or entire classes; length and depth of
instruction is tailored to your needs. Resource folders containing handouts on relevant
topics are provided as either a supplement to library instruction, or in lieu of it.

Timing is Everything
Please schedule instruction at least one week in advance so that library staff has time to
prepare. Time slots fill quickly, so scheduling early also improves your chances of receiving
instruction on your preferred date.
When requesting library instruction for a specific class assignment, please make sure students
have a clear understanding of its requirements. Ideally, library instruction should be
scheduled close to the time students begin working on their assignment.
Your Presence is Requested
Instructors must accompany their classes during library sessions. Experience shows that
instructors in attendance make the library orientation more useful by stimulating discussion,
highlighting relevant points, and contributing additional information.
Contact Information
Please contact Jen Traore, the Library Tutor, to set up library instruction. She may be
reached by calling 480-4176 or emailing jheiding@ivytech.edu.
