The JIC Process Stages
There are several preliminary stages that occur before the JIC Project becomes active within HL7. The
stages outlined below begin as HL7 WG drafts and brings the project proposal to the WG for approval.
All JIC projects are led by one of the participating SDOs. The lead SDO is responsible for publishing the
draft standard in the required format. Those decisions are made at the JIC level and are not made by HL7.
Our JIC liaison, Ed Hammond, will coordinate with the appropriate Work Group within HL7 to identify an
HL7 project liaison. This is the person that HL7 members can contact for an update on the JIC project.
Each SDO in the JIC ballots according to its own ballot rules and close concurrent with the ballots of the
other participating SDOs, making it easier to collect and aggregate comments from all participating SDOs.
HL7 will ballot the JIC documents during the final 30 days of the longer CEN/ISO ballot cycles.
Between each ballot cycle, the lead SDO will update, re-format, and distribute the document to reflect
comments submitted by the participating SDOs in the preceding ballot, for use in the next ballot round.
