PSPC Conference Call Minutes March 24, 2003 Attendees: Gloria Woody (FAMU), Rita Pellen (FAU), Michele Newberry (FCLA), Elaine Henjum (FCLA), Daniel Liestman (FGCU), Sherry Carrillo (FIU), David Clendinning (FSU), Mary McCormack (FSU-Law), Caroline Reed (NCF), Meg Scharf (UCF), Carol Turner (UF), Rae Jesano (UF-HSC), Bob Jones (UNF), Phyllis Ruscella(USF), Beverly Shattuck (USF-Shimberg HSC). Absent: Mon Yin-Lung (FIU-Law), Pam Williams (UF-Law), Kymberly Goodson (UWF). PSPC Subcommittee Chairs: Rich Bennett, Jana Ronan. Guests: Beth Layton, UF-HSC. 1. The February 2003 meeting minutes were approved as corrected. 2. There were no announcements. 3. Subcommittee Reports Florida Digital Reference – Jana Ronan reported that the subcommittee met by telephone conference call on March 17. There is interest in participating in a cooperative venture for digital reference and Jana is polling the group to develop goals for a collaborative plan. Members shared information on reference chat programs in use at respective libraries. The next conference call is scheduled for March 31. OPAC Subcommittee – Rich Bennett sent an update to the OPAC subcommittee dealing with issues in creating the Aleph OPAC interface. Lisa Tatum will have some samples on the FCLA web pages for individuals to review. Rich has expressed interest in sharing this work among the three phase one libraries so that they will have an opportunity to respond. Maggie Hogue will temporarily work on this project during Lisa’s upcoming maternity leave. 4. FCLA Report FCLA will not make the target production date for the new LMS. There is a long list of things to be tested in such areas as authority matching, adjacency, printing and report generation. It is uncertain if UF will be able to go into production this summer. Several FLCA employees will be on leave and this had not been accounted for in previous planning, however, they are moving forward and some areas are close to completion. FCLA may decide to use Harvard’s publication patterns for serials for the phase one libraries, as this solution would be preferable than hand keying the patterns. 5. Discussion of Proxies and Portals There has been confusion concerning the FCLA proxy (Apache) and EZproxy. Many institutions installed EZProxy at their libraries. It is necessary to keep the FCLA Proxy as it is needed as a back-up system and two SUL institutions are still using the FCLA proxy server. Campus Pipeline does need a proxy server to access electronic library resources. It is too early to know how MetaLib will work with portals, however, ip authentication is necessary for MetaLib. 6. Discussion of Fines and Fees After some discussion, it was decided that a subcommittee of PSPC members and Jennifer Kuntz from FCLA (to advise on Aleph functionality) would meet at FLA to review the various issues, for example, replacement cost, charges for processing, mailing fees, etc. Phyllis Ruscella will send a listing of the categories to review and whether there should be additions or deletions. The goal is to develop a general policy and same level of fines for the SUL libraries. 7. PSPC report to FLA Please send suggestions to Carol who will incorporate them and prepare the PSPC report. Meg Scharf will present the report at FLA. 8. PsycInfo evaluation participation There is a need to migrate databases that are on NOTIS so that FCLA can comply with NERDC’s request to remove data from the mainframe . PsycInfo, which consumes approximately 20% of usage, is one of these databases. ECC has asked PSPC to participate in the process that will identify criteria to select a vendor for PsycInfo. FCLA prefers to continue with APA for the content part. If the pricing for this database is under $50,000, it will not be necessary to bid. UF and FGCU will recommend reference librarians to Athena Hoeppner, Chair of ECC, who will serve as PSPC representatives for the evaluation. 9. The next PSPC call is scheduled for April 28, 2003, at 2:00 PM. This conference call has subsequently been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 6, at 2:00 PM. Respectfully submitted, Rita Pellen Florida Atlantic University
