Final Reflective Memo Assignment
I am Lakietra Wright, am I am from San Antonio TX, and I am majoring in biology and I
am currently attending Texas Wesleyan University. This semester I feel like I came into class
with a good base, in my opinion I still have a lot of work to. As a writer I believe that my
strengths are having ideas and being able to express them in a positive manner. I feel that my
weaknesses as a writer is having too much ideas and having them wonder off topic at times.
What I want my audience to understand about me is that I have a creative mind and I love to
express my thoughts and voice my opinions. I am not a person to hold in what I think, so I can
say that writing has become an outlet for me.
There were a few things that I didn’t understand after this semester. I started to
understand how genres shape reading and writing. Different types of genres can form a paper
simple because of the content inside the paper. Depending on what you’re talking about or what
subject the essay may be talking about, this can make or break and even built up a passage.
When a person is writing a passage there are basically shaping the body of the content with
information.
The difference between reporting information and taking position, reporting information
is more of finding the research than telling the audience about what you read. It’s kind of like
being a reporter; you have to find out all the info before you tell your audience about what you
learned. Taking position and supporting it with source materials, would be more along the lines
of talking about what you know or looking for what you want to find out than supporting your
theory with proof and citations.
Citing accurately is one of the most important things you can do in a paper, that’s where
all your sources come from and where you got all your information. That’s the first rule of citing
the next rule would be make sure it is in the correct format. You’re usually supposed to go off
what your professor what’s you to use, for example the MLA format is the one that my professor
recommends. Those are the main points making sure your info is correct and that you using the
correct format.
When you have a research paper, people usually use electronic sources. The thing that
you have to remember about using those kind of sources is make sure that the research you are
looking at is organized and not from a website your professor doesn’t want you using. Make sure
that the information you looking at is accurate and you’re not just putting anything down. If you
don’t make an effort to do any of these things, you could get stuck revising your work.
The one interesting thing that I learned this semester what all the different ways that you
can position yourself in an essay, some are harder than others but I thought that was pretty cool
but difficult at the same time. This course wasn’t at all what I expected; this course was a bit
more detailed than others and could be difficult at times. I honestly didn’t expect it to be a
difficult course. Overall this was a great course but as far as my writing goes it could use some
work, and that is my own fault. I am going to get better and work a little harder to make my
skills at writing more decent. My favorite assignment this year was the first assignment that we
did. I liked that we were able to pick what we wanted to talk about when it came to politics,
because not all politics are fun to talk about. I learned a lot from this assignment because I found
out something’s that I didn’t know before and that I was actually interested in. I can say it was a
good learning experience for me while I was writing that assignment. Writing in an electronic
environment was actually different for me; I’m so use to writing down my thoughts on paper
than getting it graded than transferring to the computer. This time was a little different. It had it
pros and cons. One pro was having full access to the internet and sources; one con was looking at
the computer for so long I started to get a head ach. Overall it all helped in the end, especially
when we had our class mates check our essays. I feel like that made the process go by a lot faster
and it gave us a chance to get more than one person’s feedback on our work. For me I personally
appreciate the feedback you gave us on our papers, but I’m such an anxious person so usually I
go straight to the bottom to read the last feedback comment than as I correct the paper I go back
and look at all the other comments to make my corrections or to see what I need to correct by
using the other comments you put down on our papers. Everything was a little rocky in the class
for me this semester, but I wanted to thank you for being so patient with me and letting me catch
up. I really do appreciate it. It also is a lesson learned to put ALL my information and work on a
flash.
