ARTS ASSIGNMENT
For this semester, you will be asked to prepare an essay that is both an evaluation
of an arts experience as well as a description of your feelings in response to it (i.e. an
affective response). For your arts experience this semester, you may include activities
such as visiting a museum of art or related material, an art gallery visit, a theatre
production (no movies), a live reading of a play or a live poetry reading, a live
performance of music or dance, or some other interactive arts activity. Be sure that
your arts experience is relevant to the era covered this semester – the Middle Ages
and Renaissance. If you are in doubt as to whether some event is appropriate, please ask
me BEFORE you select it.
After reading or experiencing the artwork you have chosen, be sure to include the
following in writing about it:
1. A description of the art/event you have chosen, about a page in length, no more.
2. An identification of three especially noteworthy features about the art/event and say
why each is noteworthy.
3. Tell about your feelings in response to the work, and any other affective
considerations you would like to address, no more than a page in length for this part
of your assignment.
4. You may evaluate the work (no more than two opinions), but if you do so, be sure to
give reasons for each of your evaluations. Comparisons to other similar arts
experiences you have had may also be described if they are relevant, but for no more
than a page altogether.
Please remember that you must have attended the arts experience this semester. Be
sure to include with your assignment a means to show evidence of your attendance
at the arts experience, such as a program, ticket stub, receipt, etc. If you have any
questions about your assignment, please be sure to ask me before proceeding; I shall be
happy to assist or direct you.
LENGTH: 4 PAGES, TYPED, DOUBLE-SPACED
DATE DUE: 25 APRIL - Please be sure to provide both an electronic copy of your essay
on Turnitin.com, and a hard copy to me. Thanks!
