Course Outcomes: In accordance with each individual’s capabilities, the student will:
1. Identify the eight parts of speech and recognize correct usage of each grammatical form.
2. Develop simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentences.
3. Write description, comparison/contrast, summarization, and Literary Analysis essays.
4. Develop proofreading techniques dealing with grammar, punctuation, and content.
5. Define and utilize the elements of poetry, short story, novel, and drama in critical analysis through writing.
6. Use new vocabulary correctly.
7. Use a variety of reading strategies to summarize and evaluate a text.
8. Deliver oral presentations and projects.

(Bell Work is worth 5 points per day and may not be made up. Half
credit will be given if tardy. Extra credit is the only way to make-up Bell
Work points Students will also receive 3 professional points per day for ontask behaviors.)
(Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday. Reading assignments vary
by unit. In addition, students should study for weekly vocabulary quizzes)
(Class Work includes journals, formal essays, grammar, and reading
comprehension assignments)
(Periodic grammar quizzes and tests will be given. Additionally, thematic
projects and oral presentations will be assigned.)
Written Work Standards:
1. Organized folder or binder for class work, papers/projects, and homework

One 70-page journal (college ruled).
A correct heading must always be used with first and last name. The heading should appear in the upper left-hand corner
beginning on the top line. Example:

4. All papers, journals, and bell work will be written legibly.
5. Sloppy, inaccurate, or unprofessional work may be rejected and given a grade of 0.
6. If in doubt ASK. It’s better than redoing it later!

So that we understand each other from the start, NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO KEEP THE
TEACHER FROM TEACHING OR THE STUDENTS FROM LEARNING.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
ALL STUDENTS WILL:
1. be in their seats and ready to begin working when class begins. No tolerance for tardiness!
2. obey teacher at all times without grumbling or disputing. Absolutely NO back talk!
3. not disrupt class by talking, whispering, passing notes, or by using ANY other forms of verbal or nonverbal communication.
4. refrain from abusive or disrespectful language (written or verbal).
5. raise hand to speak during discussions.
GENERAL CLASSROOM ORDER
1. NO CELL PONES! PLEASE KEEP THEM IN YOUR LOCKER OR ANOTHER SAFE PLACE.
2. NO PROJECTILES! (This includes throwing things into waste baskets.)
3. No one may leave the classroom without providing an “Out-of-Class Pass” to teacher (below).
4. No writing on or marring desks, chairs, computers, walls, and book/kindles.
5. Desks and areas around them must be neat and free of litter and students in seats before release.
ASSIGNMENT POLICIES.
Assignments will be accepted late due to an excused absence only (one day late for each day missed). Students are
responsible to retrieve missed assignments from assignment center and missed notes from a study partner. Please see
the teacher at the beginning and/or end of class about any missed assignments.
NOTE: No work can be made up if a student is found truant.
CONSEQUENCES OF MISBEHAVIOR
Classroom disruption will result in the following:
1st Student receives verbal warning.
2nd Student is isolated from the rest of the class inside or outside of the room. (The student’s name is placed on the board)
3rd Student will be referred to Principal, and/or parents will be notified. Lunch detention will be given to students who lose
all professionalism points for the day (3/day).
