Year 11 Applied Business - Work for Christmas holidays Complete/improve work on the first four sections of the preparation for the second controlled assessment (see attached sheets below). The areas covered are the introduction to McDonalds, job roles, working arrangements and rewards, and recruitment. Remember to complete both parts of each section i.e. the general section on the theory underpinning the topic and the applied section which relates specifically to McDonald's. When making improvements you'll have to try and remember your progress to date if you do not have your file. As a guide, the applied section is to be the longest section of the two parts. This work must be completed and saved on a USB and brought into school first lesson after Christmas. Controlled Assessment Two: People in Business McDonald's 1. Introduction to McDonald's 2. Legislation Consumer and business legislation (theory) A legal course of action in a customer dispute in McDonalds (applied) Introduction to McDonald's Set up a file called introduction to McDonalds For this section complete the following steps: 1. Include some general background on the business, when it was established and a very brief history to date. 2. Where is it located? - describe the location of the branch that you are looking at (either Carmarthen or Pembroke Dock) 3. What type of activity does the business take part in? Is it making goods, selling goods or another form of activity? 4. What type of businesses is it? Is it a sole trader, partnership Ltd Company, public limited company, franchise or co-operative? Explain briefly the features of this type of business. 5. Is it a large or small employer? I.e. how many people does it employ? 6. Who are the main customers? 7. How is the business regarded generally by employees and customers? Make sure you use your own words Job Roles (theory – A01i) Set up a file called assessment objective one, part one: job roles. In this file you must write a general explanation of your understanding of the different job levels defined in job specifications. For this section complete the following steps: 1. Explain that most businesses have hierarchical structures with the bosses/managers at the top and the workers/operatives at the bottom, in between are the supervisors, and alongside the operatives are the support staff. Write this in your own words as an introduction. 2. Draw a hierarchical structure showing this (a triangle or pyramid p163) 3. Give a definition of a manager and then list and explain the roles or jobs that a manager carries out (p171-174). 4. Give a definition of a supervisor and then list and explain the roles or jobs that a supervisor carries out (p174-177). 5. Give a definition of an operative or employee and then list and explain the roles or jobs that an operative carries out (p178-179). 6. Give a definition of support staff and then list and explain the roles or jobs that support staff carry out (p180-182). Describe the structure of your chosen business with the aid of an organisational chart (a) Is it a flat structure (only a few levels of different employees) or a tall structure (a large number of levels)? (b) Is the business organised along functional lines? I.e. in departments, for example, you may have a marketing manager, with an assistant marketing manager and then employees who work within the marketing department. You must draw the organisational chart of McDonald's 2. Research three different job specifications across McDonald’s hierarchy structure. (a) You may look at a crew member, apprentice, trainee business manager, work experience, work trials, or head office worker, but they must be at different levels i.e. manager, supervisor, operative, support worker (b) Once you have carried out your research, write a detailed explanation on how the roles and responsibilities differ across these different levels in McDonald’s? I.e. what are the key responsibilities for each job - on the McDonald's website each role is described in detail, including key responsibilities? Make sure you use your own words Working Arrangements (theory – A01ii) Now set up a file called assessment objective one, part two: working arrangements In this file you must write a general explanation of the differing types of working arrangements that exist. For this section complete the following steps: 1. Explain the difference between permanent and temporary work (p 189). 2. Explain the difference between full and part-time work (p189). 3. Explain how hours of work may be shift work, flexitime, overtime, breaks from work (p189-191). 4. Explain how the place of work may differ by looking at work in offices, retail outlets, tele-working, mobile and home-based working (p191-192). 5. Explain the different types of pay and benefits, including holidays (p193-194). 6. Explain the importance of flexibility of staff today, and why working arrangements may need to change - may be to introduce introduce new technology, or team-working etc (p195-197). Working Arrangements (applied) 1. Describe the working arrangements in McDonald's. Include information on the working arrangements particular to each of the three job roles. a) Is the particular worker (e.g. crew member) full-time or part-time? b) Are they in permanent or temporary employment? c) What are their hours of work? d) Where do they work? e) Do they have to be flexible in their employment? f) The rewards in the job 2. Describe the training available to each of these workers throughout their careers 3. How does McDonalds encourage and retain their staff? 4. Describe any new working arrangements recently introduced at McDonald's. 5. Recommend some changes that could be made to the working arrangements at McDonald's which would benefit the company as a whole. In this file you must write a general explanation of the recruitment process of a business. For this section complete the following steps: Recruitment 1. Explain briefly the main steps of the recruitment process for a business (p237-243). The steps you must explain are: identifying the vacancy; drawing up a job description; drawing up a person specification; advertising the vacancy; short listing applicants; interviewing applicants; selecting and appointing the most appropriate candidate. 2. Explain briefly the legal and ethical rules which affect the recruitment process including legislation (laws) passed on discrimination linked to disability, gender and race and ethical guidance on good practice (p208-209). 3. Explain briefly the personal job application process including a brief description of the key features of a good CV, application form, letter of application and interview performance (p246-251). Describe the recruitment process used by McDonald's to fill job vacancies. 2. Describe other possible recruitment methods which McDonald's could have used, and compare these with the actual process of recruitment used by McDonald's. 3. Using one method of application, apply for a vacancy suitable for a school leaver with your chosen business.
