Assignment Sheet

If you have 0/5 (no NT) on the sheet that was handed back to you today, give me your reference book source
form (the one that you were supposed to turn in last week). If you do that, I’ll change that 0 to a 5.
If you have 0/5 NT on that same sheet, you need to choose your Gale Student Resources in Context article and
begin the citation in NoodleTools (what we did together in class last week), OR you need to fix a problem
related to that article or citation (see the note on your sheet). If you correctly fix this problem by the end of
class, I’ll change that 0 to a 5.

DAY FIVE ASSIGNMENT SHEET
1) Choose your history database reference article from one of these three history databases (your choice
must have <Biography> next to it in the search results):
American History Online (if your famous person was an American)
Ancient and Medieval History Online (if your famous person lived before mid-15th century)
Modern World History Online (if your famous person lived after mid-15th century)
(Make sure there is a line that says “From” with a book title after it underneath the title of the article—if you
choose an article that does not have a book title there (it cannot say Facts on File—that is not a book title),
you’ll get 0 points for this and have to choose a different article.)
Begin the NoodleTools citation for this source in the same way I had you begin the citation for the Gale Student
Resources in Context article last week (enter the name of the database, correctly copy/paste the URL for the
article (for these history databases, you must right click on the URL at the bottom of the article then click on
Copy Shortcut), and enter XXX in the Title of Encyclopedia box). Don’t forget to click “view live web page”
to make certain that the link goes directly to the article that you chose.
2) Complete the subscription database assignment below. If you do not get this finished in class, you may
take it with you to finish—but I need it back by the end of this week if you do that. If you really don’t think
you’ll complete more than what you have done now, please just leave it—it’s better to have a few points than to
end up with zero points because you didn’t bring it back.
3) If you have time in class after completing #2, begin creating the citation in NoodleTools for your print
reference book article (the one from the library’s reference section). Once you get to the fill-in screen, simply
transfer the information that has already been filled in on the source form that I returned to you today (if you
gave it back to me last week).
SUBSCRIPTION DATABASE ASSIGNMENT
For the following ten questions, open the database given in the question then find the answer in that
database.
1) In SIRS Issues Researcher, scroll down to Drunk Driving under Leading Issues. What is the question in
bold print under “Pro/Con Issues and Essential Questions” for that topic?
2) Search for Jonestown in Gale Virtual Reference Library. The title of the first article in the search results is
“Jonestown Massacre.” What is the title of the reference book in which this article originally appeared?
3) Search for Internet in CQ Researcher. What is the date of the article called “Impact of the Internet on
Thinking”?
4) Search for Frankenstein in Bloom’s Literature. What is the number of total (all) results?
5) Search for child beauty pageants in Issues & Controversies. What is the issue (as stated in the form of a
question in a shaded box near the beginning of the article called “Child Beauty Pageants”)?
6) NoveList is described as a “guide for reading.” How many book reviews of Maze Runner by James Dashner
are in that database? (Click on Maze Runner in the search results then scroll down to count the number of
reviews in publications like BookList, School Library Journal, etc.)
7) Search for beagles in Image Quest. What is the total number of search results?
8) According to Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center, what is the minimum amount that a person who is
beginning a career as a calligrapher can expect to earn?
9) Search for lactose tolerance test in Health Reference Center. According to the article that originally appeared
in The Patient’s Guide to Medical Tests, what does a patient need to do to prepare for a lactose tolerance test?
10) You choose the database for this question—in what year did Joan of Arc die? In which of our databases did
you find this answer? (Answer both of these questions.)
Bonus Questions (optional):
In Gale Opposing Viewpoints, search for gun control. In the Viewpoints section, who wrote the article called
“Students Should Not Be Allowed to Carry Guns on College Campuses”?
Click on the World at War icon then open the database by clicking on World at War under Database Links.
Click on Wars (under the heading). Scroll down and select (do not search for) English Civil War. Look at the
links to the left of the article—who were the opponents in this war?
