My Artifact ASSIGNMENT An artifact is an object created or shaped by humans that has some sort of story or history that is attached to it. Tonight you need to find an artifact (object) that somehow represents you. Your artifact should be important to you in some way. This means it makes you think of something about you, or an event, or person important in your life. Usually an artifact will have a story connected to it and to your life. An artifact can be anything and will be different for each person. Some examples may be: trophy or medals, pictures, family heirlooms, a favorite book, a favorite toy from when you were little, jewelry, clothing, sports equipment, any other object that reminds you of something important. 1) Find your artifact. 2) Write about your artifact (this should be several paragraphs long!). o Tell what your artifact is. Describe it. Where and when did you get it? o Tell why you chose the artifact, giving reasons and explanations. Was it an easy or difficult choice? Why? o Tell why the artifact is important to you and how it relates to your life. o What greater story does the artifact tell about you and your life? 3) Bring your artifact and writing to class tomorrow. 4) Be prepared to share your artifact with the class, telling its story and why it is important to you. Example 1 (Author Anonymous) Example 2 (Author Anonymous) The artifact that I chose was my motocross gloves. They are what I wear when I ride my dirt bike and they have a lot of little tiny holes in them so that air can get in and cool your hands. I got these gloves one day when I was at Star City Motorsports. I chose this artifact because they are part of my favorite thing in the world, my dirt bike, and it’s not common for a girl to ride one. Another reason is that they were easy to carry and they are a cool piece of my gear that I couldn’t really do without. This was a tough choice because there were many things that I could choose from and so many other things that remind me of good stories. The artifact that I chose is important to me because the gloves help you hold on to your bike. I also see it as something that helps me keep a relationship with my dad, as it is something we do together when I’m at his house. One story about this artifact is once when I crashed. I was out at my friend’s place riding motocross with him and his sister was riding a four-wheeler with us. He and I decided to race and were heading down this path at about 45. His sister wasn’t far in front of us and as we pulled up near her she turned right in front of me. That’s when I flipped my bike, front first, over her and I went flying through the air and so did my bike. In the end, I got a little bit of a headache and I messed up my bike by bending the front rotor and some other parts. This is just one of the many stories that I have from dirt bike and that’s why I chose to bring my motocross gloves. My artifact is Ramen Noodles. Ramen comes in a small package with white, hard noodles in the inside and a small thin package of seasoning. The color of Ramen varies from the flavor you get. Ramen has been in my family for as long as I can remember! I chose Ramen because it is a family favorite. Our cupboards never go without Ramen. When I thought about an artifact, the first thing that came to my mind were Ramen Noodles! Ramen is very important to me. When I was little and wasn’t yet allowed to use the stove, my sister would make my Ramen for me. I will never forget one time I was making Ramen on my own and the water boiled over so I quickly, so I used a whole roll of paper towels and tried to clean it but when I touched the paper towels to the stove they burst into flames. So not only was water everywhere on an electric stove but I also started a fire! I was in so much trouble. But I learned a good lesson from that time making Ramen Noodles. I now watch it very carefully so it doesn’t boil over. Ramen is my life. It is a snack and a dinner. And since my parents work a lot, I spend a lot of time with the noodles. I love Ramen, chicken, beef, or shrimp. They always put a smile on my face. Example 1 (Author Anonymous) Example 2 (Author Anonymous) The artifact that I chose was my motocross gloves.
