For Immediate Release CONTACT: Connie Tedesco, Otsego Land Trust, Inc. Cooperstown, N.Y. (607) 547-2366 DATE: 13 September 2010 Hike the “Green Mile” On September 21st, Otsego Land Trust, in partnership with the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK)—Susquehanna Chapter, will be sponsoring a public hike along the “Green Mile”, a mile of protected shoreline at the confluence of Oaks Creek and the Susquehanna River. Besides its natural beauty and ecological importance, history abounds in Phoenix Mills, named for the cotton mill and saw mill that once stood there. In William Cooper's Town, author Alan Taylor identifies the Susquehanna River and Oaks Creek confluence as the home of David Shipman, the early settler who inspired James Fenimore Cooper’s fictional character Leatherstocking in The Pioneers and related novels. Prior to Shipman the confluence area was inhabited by local tribes, according to David Staley, archaeologist with New York State’s Cultural Resource Survey Program. A carpool from Oneonta will meet at the Price Chopper parking lot at 9:30 a.m. In northern Otsego County, meet at the east end of Phoenix Mills Cross Road, past the Otsego Manor. The 2 hour walk will begin at 10:00 a.m. Bring a bag lunch. For additional information, contact Otsego Land Trust (607) 547-2366, connie@otsegolandtrust.org, or Mary Dunkle of the ADK Susquehanna Chapter, (607) 547-2162.
