COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
English IV provides instruction in the critical analysis of representative examples from British literature,
as they reflect changes in the language and the development of the literary traditions of the English
language. Writing experiences are structured to provide practice in real-life writing situations likely to
be encountered beyond secondary school, including technical, creative, and traditional academic modes.
Opportunity is provided to extend speaking, researching, and listening skills. Content includes
instruction in vocabulary strategies and reading necessary for comprehension of printed materials.
Technology is incorporated into all aspects of the course.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES:
The broad learning objectives are based on the Language Arts Florida Standards. After completing this
course, students will be able to:

Range of Writing
10. Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a
single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences
REQUIRED CLASS MATERIALS:
Textbook- Florida Collections-Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
 Students are required to bring this text to class on a DAILY basis, unless otherwise
instructed. Failure to do so will result in a zero for any book work given on that day.
 When reading novels, students are required to bring these to class DAILY as well. Failure to
do so will result in a zero for any book work given on that day.
Supplies include the following items: pens (black or blue ink only), pencils, 3-ring binder, spiral or
black and white notebook. Don’t ask for a pen, pencil or paper. It is your JOB to come
to class prepared.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS: Failure to comply with the policies may result in parent
conferences and/or Administrative referral:
1. During the instruction/lecture portion of class, each student must give his/her undivided attention
to the instructor, guest speakers, and classmates who are recognized to speak.
2. Food and beverages, including chewing gum, are not allowed in the classroom at any time.
3. Restrooms are to be used before and after class (must ask for pass for emergencies).
4. Refrain from personal grooming during class.
5. Take pride in the way our classroom and school appear. Do not leave paper or trash on the floor
or desks. Do not write on the desks or walls. Take PRIDE in our school.
6. Each student must bring his/her required materials to class everyday. NO EXCEPTIONS.
7. Sharpen your pencil and sit in your ASSIGNED seat prior to the bell ringing.
8. Physical and verbal abuse are not allowed in our classroom.
9. No personal technological devices should be used or out during class. If a cell phone or iPod, for
example, is seen out during class, the teacher reserves the right to take the device and give it to
an administrator.
10. Personal matters must be taken care of during your lunch period, or before, or after school. No
passes.
11. Students must adhere to all county and school rules.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. ATTENDANCE IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. If you have an excused absence you will
have two days to make up work for every day missed. Upon returning to school see the “while
you were out” folder to pick up assignments you have missed and check with a fellow student to
get missed class notes. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF 0.
2. Homework will be checked and graded. Missed assignments will negatively affect your grade.
3. Students must be able to work independently to complete assigned tasks.
4. Students must be able to work in cooperative groups with other students.
5. Oral participation and writing assignments will be done on a regular basis.

just a sample of the Major Assignments. Due dates will be determined as assignment is given.

EVALUATION; The grading system will be based on content specific writing components, reading
selections, quizzes, tests, completed assignments, journals, essays, book reports, research paper/poster,
map skills, notebook portfolio, and class participation. A final grade will be given based on the percent
average of the previous and according to the countywide grades scale.
A = 90-100
B+= 87-89
B = 80- 86
C+= 77-79
C = 70-76
D+= 67-69
D = 60-66
F = 0-59

- This grading scale is subject to change at the teacher’s discretion.
- Students must keep all graded assignments in their notebook. If a grade is in question the student must
have the work to show to the teacher.
- Academic dishonesty (cheating of any kind) will result in a grade of 0, a referral and a phone call
home.
- Late assignments will be penalized 10% for 1 day late and 50% for 2 days late. Anything beyond
2 days is a zero. Late work placed in the “late work” box. ***HOMEWORK IS NOT
ACCEPTED LATE.
- Extra Credit: Students will be given extra credit opportunities (essays, posters) during the term.
- You are required to keep this course syllabus in your notebook and please feel free to refer to it as
needed.
- Your success in mastering the content of this course is my utmost priority, but your effort will greatly
affect your performance. If you have any problems or questions, please don’t hesitate to seek my
assistance.
It is recommended that you record the names and phone numbers of at least two other classmates to
form a study group. Please be advised that this syllabus may be altered to suit the needs of the
students and the school.
