 Be able to answer 10 true/false questions about the plot of the
book.
Part III: MULTIPLE-CHOICE (plot)
 Questions will mainly cover plot events from the book. A good
way to review for this section would be to skim through the book.
The test WILL BE OPEN BOOK!
PART IV: MULTIPLE-CHOICE (literary devices)
Know the following literary devices:
 Flashback: going back in time to talk about a previous event
 Alliteration: using the same sound at least twice in a sentence
 Simile: a comparison using “like” or “as”
 Hyperbole: an extreme exaggeration
 Metaphor: comparison not using “like” or “as”
 Idiom: when the author says something they don’t actually mean.
 Antagonist: the character opposing the protagonist.
 Denotation: the dictionary definition of a word.
Point of view: know difference between 1st and 3rd person.
Personification: giving inanimate objects human characteristics.
Theme: The central idea of a story.
Protagonist: The leading character, hero, or heroine of the story.
Onomatopoeia: The use of words that imitate the sounds they
describe.
 Foreshadowing: Giving a hint what will happen next.
 Tone: The way the author makes you feel about a passage.





PART V: MULTIPLE CHOICE (plot development)
 Exposition: Where the setting and characters are introduced.
 Rising Action: Conflicts begin to happen; story gets exciting.
 Climax: The most intense moment or turning point of a story.
 Falling Action: The action drops off after the climax.
 Resolution: How is the problem solved at the end?
PART VI: MULTIPLE CHOICE (conflict)
 Man vs. man: A character’s struggle with another character.
 Man vs. nature: A character’s struggle against nature.
 Man vs. society: A character’s struggle against society.
 Man vs. himself: A character’s struggle against himself.
 Internal conflict: A conflict that takes place inside you.
 External conflict: A conflict that takes pace between you and an
outside force.
