Literature: Plot Structure Plot is the sequence of events in a literary work. Exposition: introduction of the characters, setting, and the basic situation. Initiating Event: main conflict - the largest area of struggle between opposing forces. External: conflict in which a character must struggle with an outside force o individual vs. individual – o individual vs. nature – o individual vs. society – o individual vs. supernatural – o individual vs. technology – Internal: conflict in which a character must struggle within his/her own mind (i.e. emotions) o individual vs. self Rising Action: events that lead to the turning point within a text. Climax: the turning point or highest point of interest within a text. Falling Action: events that begin to conclude the central conflict and lead to a resolution. Resolution: the end of the text and a resolution to the central conflict.
