• • • Dear Parents, Welcome to McCullough Jr. High! I am very pleased to have the opportunity to instruct your child in their seventh grade language arts course. Seventh grade is definitely a transitional year where we will close the gap between elementary and high school. It is a great experience for you and the child and I am excited that I am able to be a part of that experience. I have included some pertinent information to you and your child. I ask that you and your child sign the last page and return it to school. • • This year, we will have a varied curriculum, which will include reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We will read three novels together as a class. The school may provide some copies of the novels, but I encourage each student to purchase their own copy. This will allow the student to enhance their understanding of the novel by making marginal notes, underlining, and highlighting text. Each student should obtain a copy of the each of the following novels: • • • • • • Nothing But The Truth by Avi Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse Tunes for Bears to Dance To by Robert Cornier These novels should be available for purchase in the library at Open House, but can also be found or ordered in most bookstores and online. • • • In addition to the novels listed above, students will also be encouraged to read on a daily basis . Our department has a program called SURF: Sustained Uninterrupted Reading For Fun. This program is to help students develop a love of reading. They will have the opportunity to choose three books of their choice each nine weeks to read. Students should bring the SURF book they are reading to class everyday. Parents should ensure that the SURF books are school and age appropriate, and meet their approval. A project will be assigned over the SURF books each nine weeks. • • I appreciate you taking the time to review this classroom information. I look forward to an exciting year for everyone. Upon receipt of this letter, I ask that you would send me an e-mail with your child’s name and class color in the subject line(they will be assigned class colors). This will make it easier to compose a class e-mail list for easier communication. I encourage you to also check my website and your child’s planner for assignments and other pertinent information. I look forward to meeting you at Open House on Tuesday, September 2!
