What defines non-fiction?
The definition of non-fiction is when a story is based on true facts. There
are several types of non-fiction works. They are essays, articles, and speeches.
An example of an essay is “The Ignored Lesson of Anne Frank”. The
purpose of an essay is used to discuss a specific topic. It often includes the
authors personal opinions. Speeches are used to provide factual information,
persuade, explain, or entertain. An example of a speech is the “Presidential
Address”. Articles are a type of non-fiction work that tries to inform or persuade
you. An example of an article is “Haiti's Children Adrift in a World of Chaos”.
There are several literary elements that are used to discuss non-fiction.
For example, the purpose in “The Ignored Lesson of Anne Frank” is, the author is
trying to tell you the depth of the Anne Frank story and his opinion of what he
thinks they should have done. Tone, the authors tone in the essay is he is a little
frustrated that they had no other plan of action and that the war happened at all.
Style, the authors style is formal. Perspective, the authors perspective on the
story is that he feels bad for the Jews and he is on their side.
