McCall, 1 McCall, Taylor ENG 101 Balaskovits August 26, 2014 Critique of “The Appeal of the Androgynous Man” Amy Gross, the author of “The Appeal of the Androgynous Man”, feels as though her ideal man is someone who relates to her likes, her ambitions, and her desires. She feels as though the ideal man is an androgynous, someone who has the characteristics of both a male and a female, and every woman should aspire and dream of a man like that. Gross states, “The androgynous man is not your opponent but your teammate”, and she compares the “all-man man” as a woman’s opponent. However, while Gross compares the very diverse characteristics of the androgynous man and the all-man man throughout her essay, she fails to see that there are many different types of men, no one man is the same as another. Some guys are sensitive, take her shopping, and do the housework, kind of guys. On the other hand, some men are manly, hunting and fishing, football and beer, type of guy. But what Gross fails to state in her essay is the fact that every man is different and some men do not fall under a specific category, however are their own unique type. Although Amy Gross wants an androgynous man, not all women long for that kind of man. Furthermore, not all men are either one way or the other; there are different opinions of women and different types of men. The problem with Gross’s opinion is that women should pick a type of man, when in reality, a women will date many different types of men and eventually fall in love with them because of who he is, and not the type of man he is.
