Summer Reading 2013 AP Literature and Composition (Grade 12) Please read Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables (either the unabridged version OR the Enriched Classic abridged version, ISBN 978-1-4165-0026-1). You will need the Enriched Classic version for discussion in class, so make sure you purchase this version prior to the first day of class. This version can be found at local bookstores). In addition to simply reading the novel, you will need to complete a literary device analysis. This analysis is due the first day of school. Absolutely no late work is accepted. A quiz will also be administered the first day of class on Les Miserables. Please follow the criteria when preparing the literary device analysis. In addition to what will be turned in on the first day of school, students will be asked to write an in-class essay on the novel during the 2nd week of school. Literary Device analysis for Les Miserables For each of the following items, select a passage of three or more sentences (from Les Miserables) that demonstrates the particular literary device(s). Then discuss how the literary device is used and how it affects the overall passage/work. Your discussion of the literary devices does not need to define the literary device (I already know what it is) and should be at least a very well-developed paragraph of 8 to 10 sentences each. Be sure to include the chosen passage word for word before you begin discussing it along with the page number. If you are unsure about what these devices are, then take some time to refresh your memory. There is plenty of information about each one on the internet! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
