SHS Leadership Development Initiative (updated for 2010 planning) Purpose: To develop the pipeline of leaders for SHS and to strengthen our committee leadership Target audience: 1st year invite committee chairs and chair elects, hoping for a group of 12 (Want a target of 20 invited) 2nd year co-chairs, 8-12, + by nomination by a diplomate – up to 15, etc 3rd year and beyond same + by nomination by a diplomate – up to 15, etc SHS Leader Development Objectives 1. To develop leaders among current SHS volunteers 2. To attract stronger leaders by providing valuable education and learning opportunities 3. To retain current leaders and enhance continuity of SHS leaders 4. To build camaraderie between current and future leaders 5. To support leaders and help them be successful 6. To ensure the current and on-going success of the society Specific objectives for 2010: Assess our first year of the program – SWOT analysis and redesign as necessary Incorporate improvements and invite the second year’s group Our niche and content: Offers education around SHS governance Leading/influencing virtual teams, volunteers, etc Provides skills for any team based leadership Potential Topics: Working with volunteers Effective conference calls/ meetings Crucial conversations/Delegation Personal styles / learning styles Personal mastery Building a team (“virtual”) Legal (non-profit status, etc.) Committee Jean Ann Larson Heather Bradley David Cowan Marci Jackson Lucy Young 1 Potential webinar topics: Leadership development concept orientation and introduction Committee spotlight and update Working with volunteers More on personal mastery Existing IIE tactical topic webinars, e.g. IIE resources for committee leaders, the IIE Home Page, Using social networking for IIE, others Delivery Assumptions: Year 1: carve out a ½ day at the conference (pre or post – Right now Sunday AM looks like it has the most potential); supplement with up-to four webinars (record them for later use!) – potentially use existing IIE content that compliments the face-to-face session Year 2: For graduates, add additional webinars; possibly a short face-to-face at the 2011 conference and recognize graduates For new class; ½ day at the conference; increase number and topics covered through webinars based on learnings from year 1 Costs considered: Travel to the conference for participants whose companies do not reimburse – not feasible Meeting space – can be done during the conference Content development/purchase – JAL, HB and other committee members Content delivery - JAL, HB and other committee members Materials – IIE/SHS to provide, e.g. binders and handouts Certificates – JAL/HB One night in hotel for participants plus meals – except for breakfast and refreshments during the workshop, not feasible Next steps: Share concepts at July 15th Board meeting…are we on/off course with this?
