55. Appointment of Chairman for 2014/15

RESOLVED: that Councillor H Hancock be elected Chairman of the Committee for 2014/15.

56. Appointment of Vice-Chairman for 2014/15

RESOLVED: that Councillor Mrs J Hothersall be elected Vice-

Chairman of the Committee for 2014/15.

57. Apologies for Absence

Apologies for absence were received from Councillors L Read, Miss A Turner,

D Wooldridge and Mrs L Woollard.

58. Minutes of the Last Meeting

RESOLVED: that the minutes of the last meeting held on 22

59. Declarations of Interest

April 2014 be approved as a correct record and signed by the chairman.

There were no Declarations of Interest.

60. War Memorial Time Capsule

The Town Manager presented a report on the recent time capsule found at

Penwortham War Memorial and asked Members to consider the contents of a new time capsule from the present day to place alongside the original container on Tuesday 11 th November 2014.

After a short discussion, the Committee agreed that a local newspaper along with a copy of the service on the 11 th November 2014 should be included in the new capsule. It was also suggested that a copy of Penwortham Town

Council be inserted into the capsule along with recent photos of the war memorial and a letter from the friends of the war memorial.

The Committee agreed that in order to insert a copy of the Lancashire

Evening Post dated 11 th November, the actual seeling of the container and placement into the war memorial would have to take place after the 11 th

November service.

Councillor Howarth suggested including a memory stick to represent the current digital age, however, it was advised by Preston Archives that due to the advancement in technology, the device would be unreadable in 100 years time.

RECOMMENDED: that a local newspaper, dated 11

61. Memorial Benches and Tress th

November 2014, a Town Council newsletter, order of service sheet, recent photos of the war memorial and a letter from the friends group be placed in a time capsule to be inserted in the war memorial.

The Committee considered a report on the memorial benches and trees at Hill

Road Cemetery. It was reported that the sale of the benches and trees had proved to be very popular and that only a limited number of positions remained within the cemetery.

The Town Manager presented a number of options including an increase in the cost to purchase a tree/bench due to the rise in demand and lack of space available.

Councillor JR Hothersall suggested utilising the bridleway between Hurst

Grange Park to cater for the demand for trees and benches. The possible use of the Woodland Burial site was also raised as an alternative option.

It was agreed that the Town Council should make further enquiries regarding the possible use of the bridleway and the Woodland Burial site.

The Chairman proposed that the matter be deferred until the next Committee meeting to be held at the Cemetery.

RECOMMENDED: that consideration of this matter be deferred to the next meeting to be held at the

Cemetery and the additional information requested be provided.

62. Woodland Burial Site

A report was considered on the possibility of further works to the Woodland

Burial Site to slightly formalise the area to encourage woodland burials and improve the ability to maintain the site.

The Chairman proposed that enquiries should be made into the cost of developing the Woodland Burial Site and reported at the next meeting of the

Cemetery Committee.
