NEW KITCHEN DIRECTOR by Larry Skinner, President The Board has appointed CONNIE FROATS as Kitchen Director. Welcome, Connie. We appreciate your commitment to helping our Club events run smoothly. CAPITAL FUND UPDATE by Jim Stewart, Treasurer Back in 2002, the MCC instituted a prepayment program for our “CAPITAL FUND” covering the five-year curling seasons’ period October 2002 – April 2007. The Capital Fund has and will continue to be an important aspect of the club’s financial health and stability. The time has come to implement a new five-year program. The program is as follows: A one-time prepayment of $100.00 (up to and including registration night) which will allow a $25.00 deduction from your total registration fees for a five-year curling seasons period beginning with the 2007-08 curling season. As before, there are no refunds (pro-rated or otherwise). The Boards of Directors have appreciated previous support of this program. The present and future Boards will be equally appreciative. These funds are segregated and accounting for them is separate from our Operations. Each year a budget is approved by the membership at the AGM. CLUB DEFIBRILLATOR by Michael Schulz, Vice-President Cardiac arrest strikes people of all ages and fitness levels. Many of these lives could be saved if bystanders act promptly to phone 911 and begin CPR and if trained responders provide defibrillation within minutes. The Curling Club has purchased a Zoll AED plus defibrillator at a cost of about $2,650 including taxes. The latest Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are simple to use. They automatically detect what treatment is appropriate for the victim and give the rescuer instructions for administering treatment via audio prompts. The City of Ottawa has purchased over 400 of these Zoll AED units and has positioned them in various public buildings including the Manotick Arena and Library. Approximately 30 club members can be trained to use the defibrillator. To spread out the training among the various leagues, we will involve the league conveners in identifying potential candidates. If you are interested, please contact your league convener. SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE by Larry Skinner, President In the absence of a Special Events Director, a Special Events Committee, spearheaded by Dick Webster, is in place for next season. The Board welcomes this initiative. Dick and his team of volunteers are committed to making our house bonspiels lots of fun for the members. They include the Opening and Closing Bonspiel, the Turkey Bonspiel, the Member-Guest spiel, and the St. Paddy’s Day spiel. As well, they will help in some other invitational bonspiels. PRESIDENT’S SHIELD PLAYOFFS by Ken Wood, Match Director This season, the President’s Shield will have a new format. It will be a double-knockout tournament and will take place during the last two weeks of curling – that is from April 1 to 12, 2008. Teams will be selected by the President of the club, or by a committee chosen by him, from the weekday evening leagues and the Monday morning men’s league. PRIVACY POLICY AND THE MCC WEBSITE by Janet McGuire, Communications Our Privacy Policy has been amended slightly to allow the Directory to be included on the website.
