About Your Project Give your project a short title Curling When are you planning to start and finish your project? Start Date Finish Date Month Year May 2015 October 2015 Interim report will be due January 2016. Final report will be due September 2016. Education Scotland will send report formats prior to these deadlines. Any funding you receive must be used by the end of the current financial year i.e. by 31st March 2016. Tell us in no more than 75 words per question: What your project is The project involves building on existing PEPAS input through new age curling that has been pioneered and expanding this into the cluster. The project involves mentoring class teachers in delivering curling to provide a positive learning experience in PE in line with the HWB E's and O's, the significant aspects of learning and developing class teachers capacities and confidence to deliver this on their own thus ensuring a legacy from the PEPAS input. How you will deliver it Initially staff training will be delivered through PEPAS inputs to show teachers how contexts such as problem solving, decision making, focus and concentration can be rich learning contexts through the activity of curling. Staff will be shown how to set up and organise the equipment to access these learning experiences and then support visits will be planned to follow up the staff as they gain experience delivering in this newer context. Anybody you will work with to implement it. Visiting Specialist PE teacher Class teachers from the cluster to potentially lead an input and share their practice, experiences of working with the curling Cluster Head Teachers to give feedback on impact of the project in their network. This is to give us the bigger picture of what your bid is, the implementation process and any potential partners that will be involved. You should assume that we have no knowledge of your project or the school environment. How much will your project cost? Curling offers a unique context and activity to provide support for primary class teachers in delivering a quality 2 hours PE learning experience in a way that is non-threatening to class teachers thus helping them to develop confidence in their delivery. Curling lends itself naturally to engagement with the HWB E's and O's of Co-operation and Competition, Evaluating and Appreciating and also Movement Skills, Competencies and Concepts. Likewise the significant aspects of learning such as the cognitive skills of problem solving, focus and concentration and decision making are naturally accessible learning contexts through the activity. Moreover there can also be a focus on the personal qualities of the Saol's such as determination and resilience as well as discrete developments of some physical fitness and physical competencies also. Without doubt by working in these type of learning contexts staff are also developing many of the strands of skills for learning, life and work such as working effectively with other people . The activity also lends itself naturally to numeracy work through the scoring and measuring distances involved in it. There are also natural links with Science and Technology for inter-disciplinary working when learning about speed and friction. This might be how you will develop the Skills for Learning Life & Work in your curriculum or how you will embed the Significant Aspects of Learning in your lessons leading to increased personalisation and choice for the learner. This may also take into consideration wider achievement courses or the development of pathways for learners. . How will staff capacity be increased if you receive a grant? The challenge of providing quality PE in schools with limited space and facilities is addressed through the use of Curling in this project. The minimal set up time and technical expertise needed, as well as the fact the activity can be used across all stages of the primary curriculum allows class teachers to develop quality learning experiences in the gym in a context that is non threatening for them. This has been the anecdotal experiences that class teachers have shared from the work done with them in the cluster. The project will resource, educate and give confidence to staff to deliver a quality PE learning experience as it takes out the need for staff to have technical knowledge of an activity, which can be a barrier for primary trained staff, but instead focuses on taking the existing good practice they use in their class in terms of questioning, differentiation and feedback and provides an environment that they can begin to transfer this into the gym and PE context. This is an area that research says is crucial to building staff capacity and sustaining a legacy of quality post PEPAS. Staff confidence in delivery will be monitored by the PELO's who will mentor staff through delivery and on-going visits. This might consider the impact of Career-Long Professional Learning, mentoring, collegiate working and leadership through learning for example. There should be some consideration given to how this will support improvement plans on a school, department or personal level. How will your project support or use national and/or local priorities to inspire and enhance learning? The project will embrace the philosophy and legacy of the Glasgow Commonwealth games and Ryder Cup as well as the Olympic and Para-olympic games in developing important life skills such as teamwork, respect, co-operation, resilience and determination through a quality PE learning experience. Developing curling allows access for pupils to well established local bowling clubs as the skills developed across the activities are transferable. Making full use of the existing links between clubs and schools will blend all aspects of PEPAS working by providing a quality learning experience in the educational context, which will then if pupils want to progress further allow them to access the club system to continue their engagement with the activity which benefits their social and mental well being. Consequently the project will help create in some cases and in others build on the existing links already established with the local bowling clubs and the input of active schools will only improve this area moving forward with the potential then for school festivals to be organised. In addition if pupils are particularly taken with the curling then the local curling club will provide an environment to funnel interested children who wish to take on the activity more seriously. This could include examples of how Women’s Football World Cup, Multi Sport Special Olympics or the World Walking Initiative have inspired your project or how a need identified locally has helped to inspire learning or the development of a particular skill set. How will you measure the impact that your project has had and will continue to have? The project will use many strategies to measure its success and continuing impact moving forward. In conjunction with the PEPAS remit the project will be evaluated with a survey monkey evaluation and fed back to Education Scotland. Feedback from this process which has already been undertaken in the cluster will allow modifications or pitfall's to be addressed within this project. Modeling of teaching by the PELO's initially followed by meaningful discussions around planning and lesson delivery will be applied to the project. From these discussions any problems the staff feel and encounter can be addressed in a supportive way. Furthermore observed lessons following initial inputs will allow for confirmation of progress or provide a relevant learning context to address any problems. By having a period of time built in from the initial inputs to the observed lessons allows staff to develop their practice knowing they can access the support of the PELO team at any point. This approach has resulted in excellent PE delivery from class teachers in the cluster. Collaboration from teaching staff and SMT who can share their practice/experiences will be used to build staff capacity between networks Pupil evaluations will be used to gauge pupil learning and engagement through the process. You will need to consider how you will monitor and measure the impact of your project over the funding period and beyond. This might include: Pupil voice Parental voice School QA processes Partner views How will your project challenge inequality and help to ‘close the gap’ for learners in your school or associated school group? This project aims to provide a quality PE learning experience for all across the education system. The project challenges inequality of access because it is an excellent activity for modifications to allow for a fully inclusive learning environment. It is not a sophisticated project in that it demands specialist clothing or expensive equipment to maintain. The project is fully sustainable once the actual stones have been purchased with cones and movement spots allowing for an easy set up thus ensuring an activity that can be easily delivered by primary class teachers and incorporated into the existing PE curriculum. Gymnastic ramps which some schools already have or cheap guttering allow for easy modifications for pupils with a disability to access the activity. The nature of the activity adds another dimension to a PE programme and allows pupils who may not have found success in current PE provision to achieve success. The cluster is in the 20% of deprived zones according to the SIMD index and this project aims to address this through exposing pupils to an activity they would otherwise not get the opportunity to experience if it were not delivered during curriculum time due to its expense. You should consider the following and highlight how you intend to address some or all of these issues through your project: Living in the 20% most deprived data zones (SIMD) Looked after children Young carers Children / young people with additional support needs.
