Reading to Perform a Task
You have been researching sedimentary rocks. Through your
research, you have discovered that these types of rocks form over a
long period of time from sediment, or fragments of rocks and sand,
piling up and being compressed and cemented together.
Today, we are going to make a “sedimentary rock.” Follow
the directions below using the HUCC method to create your very
own sedimentary rock.
Materials needed:
White sugar cane
Dark brown sugar
Light brown sugar
Very hot water (but not boiling)
Clear glass jar
Directions:
1. Pour a layer of white sugar cane into the jar to make a ½ inch
thick level layer.
2. Next pour a layer of light brown sugar cane into the jar atop the
white to make a ½ inch thick level layer.
3. Then, pour a layer of white sugar cane into the jar to make a ½
inch thick level layer.
4. Next, pour a layer of dark brown sugar cane into the jar to make
a ½ inch thick level layer.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 once more.
6. Atop the layered sugar, slowly pour on one cup hot water
making sure not to disturb the layers.
7. Refrigerate and observe 24 hours later.
