Every Student Deserves a SAFE ROUTE TO SCHOOL…
How about YOURS?
Are you concerned when you see a student riding a bike without a helmet? Would
you like to see your school’s students have safer cycling or walking routes to
school? Are you concerned about traffic near campus? If you answer “Yes” to one
or more of these, the Safe Routes to School Program (SR2S) is looking for you!
The program provides an amazing opportunity for communities, local governments
and schools to work together to create a healthy lifestyle for children and a safer
and cleaner environment for everyone. All that is needed is at least one motivated
volunteer to help spearhead the effort! Here are some of the ways the program
supports schools:



helps coordinate bike rodeos and helmet distribution events;
assists with in-class activities, contests, and special events to promote
alternatives to driving;
provides education and information on traffic calming and engineering
improvements;
Currently, [Fill in school name] does not have a volunteer or designated leader
to promote SR2S. Fortunately, the support and resources to make your school
routes safer are available through the Coalition for Sustainable Transportation or
COAST. Through its Safe Routes to School program, COAST brings together a
number of community partners to focus on traffic problems associated with access
to schools, as well as to increase the number of children walking and cycling to
school. *
If you personally (or jointly with another) might be interested in learning more
about SR2S, the time commitment, or what support might be available to help our
school meet the goals stated above, contact [Fill in school contact] or info@coastsantabarbara.org. Please--consider being the Safe Routes Champion at [Fill in
school name]. After all, doesn’t every child deserve a safe route to school??
*Safe Routes to School is coordinated by the Coalition for Sustainable Transportation
(COAST) and involves the support and efforts of community partners such as the PTA, the
Bicycle Coalition, County and City Public Works, Traffic Solutions, Public Health, CEC,
Kiwanis Club and many more.
