This is an entry level unit standard for people new to the meat processing industry who are required to have an understanding of chemical handling. Evidence requirements 1.1 Chemicals and their characteristics are identified using labels and other data sources. Range chemical data sheets, vendor’s data sheets, container labels. 1.2 Chemicals are described in terms of plant location and first aid requirements. 1.3 Chemicals are described in terms of spill handling procedures and plant location. Outcome 2 Identify on-site personnel safety systems in a meat processing plant. Evidence requirements 2.1 Personnel safety systems are described in terms of plant use. Range 2.2 includes but is not limited to – first aid stations, eye wash and safety showers, face mask, fire fighting equipment. Personal safety equipment is identified in terms of its function. Range includes but is not limited to – eye protection, safety footwear, gloves, clothing, face shields, respirator. 2.3 Areas where personal safety equipment is required are identified. 2.4 Description of on-site alarm systems identifies the response actions to be taken. Range evacuation alarms, fire alarms, all clear alarms. Outcome 3 Describe the effects of hazardous chemicals in the meat processing industry on humans. Evidence requirements 3.1 This unit standard is skin, eyes, mouth, lungs. Description includes the expiring hazards associated with chemical use. Description includes the pathways by which chemicals enter the human body. Range 3.2 Range includes but is not limited to – burns, allergies, dermatitis, poisoning. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
