NZQA Expiring unit standard 18977 version 5 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of the generation and use of electricity Level 1 Credits 2 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe electric current; describe electrical circuits; describe a safe practice when using electricity; describe the generation of electricity; and identify electrical specifications of an appliance. Classification Science > Physics Available grade Achieved Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe electric current. Evidence requirements 1.1 The description includes a definition of electric current and the factors required for a flow of electrons. 1.2 The description includes the properties of conductors and insulators in relation to a flow of electrons. Outcome 2 Describe electrical circuits. Range components of a circuit may include but are not limited to – light bulb, power supply, wires, switch, fuse, voltmeter, ammeter, rheostat; evidence of three components of a circuit is required. Evidence requirements 2.1 The description identifies the components of the circuit. 2.2 The description identifies how the components of a circuit are wired. Range 2.3 series, parallel. The description outlines the function or the effect of each component. Range safe practices include – fuses or cut out switches, isolating transformers or RCD, earthing, outlet positioning, correct wiring; evidence of one safe practice is required. Evidence requirements 3.1 The description outlines the factor(s) or method critical to the safe practice. Outcome 4 Describe the generation of electricity. Range generation processes include – hydro, wind, coal, gas, geothermal; evidence of one generation process is required. Evidence requirements 4.1 The description outlines the key steps in the generation process. Outcome 5 Identify electrical specifications of an appliance. Evidence requirements 5.1 The identification includes the power rating, determined either by calculation or by examination of information on the appliance. 5.2 The identification includes the calculated running cost of the appliance. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
