PRODUCT SPECIFICATION July 2012 TM EasyLap panel Introduction The following information outlines the specifications for the James Hardie EasyLapTM panel that can be included into a project specification. Depending on the project, certain options can be deleted. Note: The EasyLapTM panel must be installed and maintained in accordance to the current James EasyLapTM panel installation Instructions. 1.1 GENERAL CONDITIONS OF CONTRACT Comply with statutory requirements/materials, labour and construction plant/materials and work, together with additional conditions including: attending pre-construction meeting: Quality Assurance Inspection & Test Plan: Warranties; and other. 1.2 EASYLAPTM PANEL The basic composition is Portland cement, ground sand, cellulose fibre and water. PRODUCT SPECIFICATION 1.6 GROUND CLEARANCE Install James Hardie external cladding with a minimum 150mm clearance to the earth on the exterior of the building or in accordance with local building codes if greater than 150mm is required. Also, maintain a minimum 50mm clearance between James Hardie external cladding and roofs, decks, paths, steps and driveways. Adjacent finished grade must slope away from the building in accordance with local building codes, typically a minimum slope of 50mm minimum over the first metre. FRAMING 1.9.1 WIND CLASSIFICATIONS Framing must be in accordance with AS 1684 - ‘Residential timber-framed construction’ and the framing manufacturer’s specifications. PRODUCT SPECIFICATION 1.9.2 FRAMING STEEL Use of steel framing must be in accordance with NASH standard for Residential and Low-Rise Steel Framing part 1: Design Criteria and the framing manufactures specifications. Framing members must have a base metal thickness (BMT) between 0.55 to 1.6mm. The steel framing must have the appropriate level of durability required to prevent corrosion.. TIMBER Use of timber framing must be in accordance with AS 1684 - ‘Residential timber-framed construction’ and the framing manufacturer’s specifications. Use only seasoned timber. STUD REQUIREMENTS 1.9.3 Minimum 45 mm wide studs on sheet joints. All intermediate supports to be: Steel 64 x 35 mm deep Timber 70 x 35 mm deep Thermal Break For steel Frames, it’s a building code requirement to install a thermal break behind direct fixed cladding ensuring that all sheet edges are covered. James Hardie recommends the HardieBreak thermal strip. Refer to the HardieBreak thermal strip installation guide for more information 1.9.4 MOISTURE MANAGEMENT A vapour permeable membrane must be installed under EasyLapTM panel sheets in accordance with the AS/NZS 4200.2 ‘Pliable building membranes and underlays – Installation’ and the manufacturer’s specifications. The membrane must have the following properties in accordance with AS/NZS 4200.1: Vapour barrier - low or medium Water barrier – high 2.0 SEALANT Polyurethane: James Hardie Joint Sealant. 2.1 CONSTRUCTION 2.1.1 ARRANGEMENT Install EasyLapTM panel so Express Joints are arranged in a vertical orientation. 2.1.2 VERTICAL JOINT Join EasyLapTM panel to James Hardie technical specification (as shown in figures 6 – 9 in the EasyLapTM panel installation instructions) 2.1.3 HORIZONTAL JOINT Provide a horizontal joint at floor joist levels to accommodate the movement resulting from timber joist shrinkage and settlement. Install a ‘z’ flashing where drainage is required at floor level (as shown in figure 25 and figure 26 ‘upper floor junction’ of the EasyLapTM panel installation instructions) 2.1.4 FOAM BACK SEALING TAPE At every vertical sheet joint, a 50mm foam back sealing tape is applied under the shiplap vertical joint and in front of the vapour permeable membrane. Note: This is not needed for steel frames as the HardieBreak thermal strip is used. 2.1.5 FASTENER SIZE AND LAYOUT Fix EasyLapTM panel to framing using the fixings specified in James Hardie EasyLapTM panel installation Instructions, Nails must have a minimum clearance of 18 mm for timber and 22 mm for steel frame from sheet edges and a minimum of 50 mm horizontal Corners and 150 mm vertically from sheet corners. Nails must finish flush with sheet surface. Screws countersink option can be overdriven 1.5 mm and filled with either Megapoxy P1 or Hilti CA125 where the temperature is below 15o use Hilti CA 273. PRODUCT SPECIFICATION 2.1.6 PAINTING EasyLap™ panels must be dry and free from dirt before painting. Coating must be completed within 3 months of sheet installation. Minimum of two coats of exterior acrylic rolled on texture coat is required. 2.1 MAINTENANCE It is the responsibility of the specifier to determine normal maintenance requirements. The extent and nature of maintenance will depend on the geographical location and exposure of the building. As a guide, it is recommended that basic normal maintenance tasks shall include but not be limited to: Washing down exterior surfaces every 6-12months Periodic inspections should be made to ensure fasteners are adequately securing the sheets to framing. Re-applying of exterior protective finishes Maintaining the exterior envelope and connections including joints, penetrations, flashings and sealants that may provide a means of moisture entry beyond the exterior cladding. Cleaning out gutters, blocked pipes and overflows as required. Pruning back vegetation that is close to or touching the building. *Refer to your paint manufacturer for washing down and recoating requirements related to paint performance.
