National Certificate in Design (Introductory Skills) (Level 2)
Level

This qualification is expiring. The last date to meet the requirements is 31 December
2017.
Purpose
This introductory qualification is for people considering a career in design. It recognises a
wide range of skills from many fields, and thus reflects the view that good design calls on
knowledge and skills from a wide variety of disciplines.
It is designed to enable the qualification to be achieved at secondary school and is linked
to the curricula at Years 11 and 12. Most studying for the qualification will do so in
combination with other Year 12 subjects and will work towards it over 2 years, with the
design components completed at the end of Year 11. This allows students to begin work
towards the National Certificate in Design Level 3, whilst completing the electives for the
Level 2 qualification.
The breadth of choices for this qualification allows the unit standards credited towards this
qualification to also be credited towards a Level 3 qualification in design and other National
Certificates at Levels 2 and 3. Thus the qualification is very flexible and has a high degree
of portability.
It is anticipated that broadly based programmes that meet the needs of the curriculum will
be maintained and that evidence towards the attainment of the standards will be collected
as part of the learning process.

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
